MICHIGAN CITY, IN | 3x24 FLOORS | PROPOSED

Architects: Lohan-Anderson, 3, 24 story highrises along Trail Creek Behind Blue Chip Casino:

Proposal for an open park where live concerts and other entertainment will be performed, the plan also calls for a Tritinton to be displayed on the back of the casino where movies will be shown...
three story townhomes span the distance of the creek in the background:

A rendering of the proposed riverwalk area, more 3 story townhomes which align the back of the creek, the elevated gondola sytem is a really great aspect:

These are very exciting times for my hometown... It still has to be approved by city council but preliminary reactions have all been extremely positive from the members... They had a presentation last thursday and 100 people from the city attended and all were in favor of the projects...

Note: The 23 story casino tower is currently up to the 16th floor and will be topped out in March...

Oh wow...

I always had a hunch Michigan City would draw something big. It's too good a location.

......frickin' awesome!

Sorry dunno what else to say. NW Indiana has been such a pit my whole life, projects like this could really transform it into a unique tourist destination.

It looks like a big project for a place the size of Michigan city. The economy must be doing pretty well there.

Yes, surprisingly the economy is doing very well, we gave up on being an industrial town and have devoted ourselves to becoming a tourist destination for many years now, there is also other major developments all over the north side of town, I'll post some renderings of them...

Here are more renderings from a study done by Andrews University which the city is currently adopting and in the process of hiring a master developer: High density mixed-use developments:

I just recently moved away from NW Indiana (La Porte, 5 mins south of MC)...I would love to see this happen. Many people from Chicago come out to MC and beyond and really fuel the economy (without them, the economy would be less than piss-poor)...although I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith into the Blue Chip, the new Four Winds up the road is a lot nicer than any of the boats along the lake.

There's a large development in La Porte going up called NewPorte Landing with a bunch of retail, offices, and residential stuff in it on the site of an old Allis-Chalmers plant. But news isn't all well, as many factories have closed in the past few years. Hopefully the jobs can be replaced although the skills people have aren't neccesarily the ones they'll need for any new jobs coming in (high paying ones, at least)

Wow, pretty surprised to see such a proposal in MC. If they build that tramway, they should find a way to connect it to the 11th St South Shore stop.

I lived in MC until I was 13. What I remember of it was an older, economically stagnant city with a fantastic lakefront and an empty downtown area with lots of great older buildings just waiting to be restored.

It has all the stuff needed to become a summer resort city, and would be able to compete well against those Michigan cities since it has two rail connections to Chicago - both Amtrak and the South Shore stop downtown. Some good investments and it could bloom.

In somewhat related news, the state has included money for preliminary studies of routing the South Shore around the street sections in Michigan City. I'm not sure if this is good for Michigan City, but it's great for the South Shore, which expects to trim 25 minutes off of the South Bend-Chicago trip. That time savings will make the railroad a LOT more competitive with driving.

Of course, it could end up looking like a disney world version of Rome, but it's got promise.

The towers are good too.

I was wondering what someone from South Bend would think of this project... I would have never imagined Michigan City even being in the same league 2 years ago. To think we would have 4 buildings over 250 ft. would've been crazy.

HEY! That's MY university! It's a pretty small university, so I was surprised to see a mention of it on here. lol It does have a good architecture program though. Anyway, I really like both sets of plans. Michigan City has been so stagnant for so long, that this explosion in new development proposals is a bit hard to believe. I hope they happen though.

cool stuff! I'm not totally sure about the gondolas - I picture that they will shortly be covered in graffiti and look like crap floating through the city. Hopefully I'm wrong about that. Quick question if anyone knows, it looked like there was a nuclear cooling tower in one of those renderings, I didn't think there were nuclear facilities in this area, so if it isn't a nuclear plant, then what is it?

michigan city's power plant does have a large, skyline-defining cooling tower that looks like it could be for a nuclear plant, but the plant's generating turbines are fueled conventionally by coal and gas, not nuclear power.
