Comments:
According to one source,
"To accommodate future growth, there is potential to expand the building to 22 stories."

However the lead architect's website says the facility is projected to be 29 stories,
"The new research tower for The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is borne out of a Master Plan to create a unique, identifiable South campus that expands research, clinical research, ambulatory care, office and support facilities. Having participated in the planning process, Ballinger is now implementing the Master Plan's research initiative - the design of 1,000,000 SF of basic research and biomedical research, supported by a 275,000 SF vivarium. The 29-story facility occupies a prominent urban site across from the Main Campus and will project an image worthy of the nation's #1 Children's Hospital. The tower will be connected to neighboring Abramson Research Center to encourage colleague interaction within a secure scientific research area."

This tower is part of Children's Hospital's 10-year, $1,500,000,000 expansion program. Construction has already begun.

Unless I am missing somthing the press release said 11 floors......although that release is also pretty old and outdated since phase II is obviously well under way. I still don't understand why they would hang a picture of a much bigger building on the fence out front.

Just because there is a potential phase later to maybe raise it above 8 or 11 floors, does not make this a high-rise (12+ or 15+ depending on who you ask). Or else CAM and numerous other medical buildings would have been highrise projects as well.

You are correct. I at least am assuming the building will look like the picture they put up at the constrction site which is clearly a hi-rise. (It's a logical assumption, no?) I don't interpret the picture as "future plans" because it doesn't include the other buildings that we now know are projected for the future. Besides, the actual fact of adding that many floors to an existing, occupied building is very impractical and rarely happens. The most rational path would be to build the whole building now and grow into it.

Love to see CHoP growing and becoming more of a national fixture! Love the building, and I'm sure they'll build the entire thing. With our city's crime problems and a growing national health care crisis (obesity in children coming to mind), in some ways I wish CHoP didn't need to expand

Exciting things are going on in University City, and the rest of West Philly is still a nice place too!

That ex-Civic Center area is going to be pretty sick (no pun intended!) in a few years. CAM by itself is quite massive in person. Partner CAM with its eventual 3 10+ story towers next to the CHoP plans, and it will be quite a glass walled campus to behold.

Definitely good news for the local construction crews. Both UPenn and CHoP are doing quite well financially. I know UPenn is paying for the CAM construction with literal cash flow, no loans which is just about silly for not-for-profit to be able to do. Keep those cash donations coming alumni!

Though that Colket building aims to block some of my shots of that area with CC in the background (CC being Cira Centre, Comcast Center, and Center City for that matter on those shots).

CHOP ROCKS!! So does U-Penn. I am frequently in that area. Without question it is the most cosmopolitan neighborhood outside of Center City. The rendering of the new projects looks really great. CHOP can pull this off. They are truly a first class act.

I must also say that at least in the CHOP, U-Penn, Drexel part of town I feel pretty safe.
