beautiful views BT- how do most San Franciscans feel about the Sutro Tower? I love it- it looks like something Godzilla would knock over:

I would say "most" are fairly ambivalent about it. It's an interesting thing on the skyline, but the people who live around it complain and whine a lot about microwave radiation giving them brain cancer and the possibility the thing will fall over in an earthquake and crush them. With the onset of digital and HD broadcast TV, there's a plan to put new antennae on it and and possibly enlarge it and the NIMBY's are a bit out of control over all that: http://www.sutro.org/ .

You might enjoy this quote from Herb Caen (deceased SF Chronicle columnist and local icon): “I keep waiting for it to stalk down the hill and attack the Golden Gate Bridge.”

This is one of the things about living in SF: Those low clouds (locally called "fog" or the "marine layer" creep in from the sea most afternoons in summer. The city's central hills (Twin peaks, Mt. Davidson) block them from the downtown area until they build up enough to pour like liquid over the top of the hills and down the side through the Castro and Haight neighborhoods. Since I live closer to downtown, I get to watch this out the window--usually at just about 4 in afternoon but on very clear days sometimes later as in the photo I posted. They usually reach my place, closer to downtown, a hour or two later and by 9 PM the whole city is swirling in mist. Usually the last place to be enveloped is the Mission District so it has a reputation for being the city's warmest, sunniest neighborhood. Sometimes to the west of the hills out by the ocean (Richmond, Sunset neighborhoods), they get no sun at all in July and August.

Ha, it is a bit like a tripod from War of the Worlds isn't it? I've always loved the Sutro Tower, too.

297.7 M, 977'.

So, taller than any of the skyscrapers in the city, and also up a pretty high hill. My question is: how high is the hill?

oh the Sutro Tower sits atop Mount Sutro, which is 909 feet...so if the Sutro Tower is 977 feet...then the top of the tower is 1886 feet above sea level
