So how's the de-theming of the Luxor? What are they going to do to it?

Supposedly the name will be changed to...wait for it...."the pyramid". WOW Rumor is, Egypt is getting copyright on "egyptian themes" like pharoahs, pyramids, etc. So to avoid licensing fees, the Luxor is being changed.

They are not changing the name. That is an old rumor that was squelched long ago. The news of Egypt laying claim to all things Egyptian came long after MGM decided to de-theme the Luxor. They simply wanted to change it from a family friendly resort to a more adult one.

Another example of news and rumors being misconstrued.

Yeah, the name is NOT changing.

Basically the big moves are:

last/early this year: new club, restaurant changes

this year: room remodel in the pyramid

late this year: re-do the second level of the atrium

the news just went over updates on monte carlo - the whole property is still vacant and closed.....the county building inspector wont allow the casino to open until the burnt facade is either supported to the building or removed.... concerned that some could still fall (?) also when the hotel opens again it will only be open from the 26th floor down........THE INSPECTER IS REQUIRING MONTE CARLO TO REMOVE "ALL" THE EIFS THRU OUT THE PROPERTY (no time rame given) - and not just the damage facade.......

the hotel could stay open during this construction and 'defacading'

this COULD mean the monte carlo tower couold geta renovation - we all scrutenized the hotel for lookin like a 'prison' with its bland window cut out and blank tower.....being that the 'theme' is nothin spectacular and not fitting with city center......MAYBE MGM would want to update the old property (albeit built in '96) give it a glass facade - new theme or new 'moder' eifs facade similar to bellagio - more sleek and design oriented....

this could turn out pretty interesting.

(note there are several different types and ways of construction eifs - monte carlo is over 10 years old so you cant compare the eifs on it with the eifs on wynn or bellagio - i took a class that showed how eifs could be made to look like ANYTHING -any color, texture, cut, material so most every project uses eifs as a subsitute for brick or stone - getting the same exact look but less $$$)

it will be interesting to see is MGM is willin to 'invest' some cash into MC to give it a face lift - and to what extent.

i really hope they make Monte Carlo into an all glass building to mix with City Center. That was my biggest gripe about the whole project, was that Monte Carlo just stuck out like a sore thumb. Im glad the county inspectors are forcing MGM to remove it, because I could not see MGM doing it on their own. I guess something good can come out of this fire afterall

Edit: after reading the articles I realized the county inspectors are not making them re-facade the whole building, just the parts that were burned. So doesnt look like we will be getting a re-make Monte Carlo.

It's kind of confusing because what the building inspector said in the video interview is different than what's been written in the articles so far. In the video he said they first have to remove or secure the damaged part before they can reopen so that stuff doesn't keep falling off. Then after that they have to start replacing the faulty material on the rest of the building, which will take a period of time to do, but they can be open during that work. One source said securing the top might only take a day or two. So there's a chance they could be open for Super Bowl weekend, but the weather is getting bad now and that might delay their efforts.

It should not take that long for the facade to be repaired, as long as the inner rebuilding is finished soon.

That MGM Grand fire years back truly was an embarassment to the city and it's past building codes. I'm very impressed with the stability of the structure of Monte Carlo.

On the news this afternoon they had a Hotel Spokesperson for the Monte Carlo in a report who told them that the building will probably look very similar to its appearance before the fire when the rebuilding is completed.

Yeah, it's for one of the boutique hotels at Echelon, either Delano or Mondrian. They'll be on the extreme south edge of the Echelon site.
