How about building in any of the areas not in green?

I think the City Hall/ Market/ Van Ness/ Upper Market Castro would have been a great place for the tallest buildings (outside of the green zone of course). It would look great up against Twin Peaks as a backdrop. It also has MUNI and BART access.

SF hasn't had a major quake like in 06 and there was nothing near what the financial district is now. Imagine the 06 quake today, or worse.

That ship has sailed over a century ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_L...eta_earthquake

It might not have been as powerful a the 1906 earthquake but a 6.9 is pretty damn serious.

The construction cam was moved. Great view of 181 Fremont and SFT as well.

^ great view! Is it from the 2nd Lumina tower? They need to straighten the camera a bit.

Yes! You were right on the money! They put in supports and are now excavating downwards.

Did we ever verify if the foundation was drilled into bedrock on this project?

I couldn't find anything that says one way or another for sure, but I did find this engineering report (p. 105) from Arup when the RFP went out in 2013:

Quote:
We assumed that the Block 5 Tower would be either a heavy concrete tower or a lighter steel structure. It is zoned for 550’ tall which we assumed equivalent to approximately 50 stories for the purposes of obtaining the dynamic properties of the Tower.

The heavy concrete tower was assumed to weigh approximately 169,000 kips. We calculated that 36 seven foot diameter concrete piles drilled approximately 8’ into bedrock would be required to control settlements.

The light steel tower was assumed to weigh approximately 82,000 kips. The light steel tower has the benefit that 36 seven foot diameter concrete piles could control settlements without having to be drilled into bedrock.
According to this (p. 50), the building will have a concrete core and have concrete floors up to level 12, after which it will be steel. So, it will be somewhere between the two scenarios, probably closer to the light steel tower. Drilling to bedrock is probably not required, but we won't know for sure unless Clark Construction tells us.

The excavation continues. They seem to be welding more steel around the edges. I'm curious if they're going to go down another floor.

Someone once said "You must go down before you can go up."

Actually, nobody ever said that, but I did take another picture.

Why doesn't this building have a diagram? I was just wondering since it's already under construction and the designs probably won't change much

This may be as deep as they're planning to go with this one - now visible are the tops of the piles previously placed, with rebar protruding and ready to tie in to the basement levels. Plus it looks like they are down far enough to accommodate the three planned levels of underground parking.

It would be a pleasant surprise to see Park Tower up and out of the ground by the end of this year or very early 2017 - and it will be nice to have it, along with Blocks 8 & 9, to tide us over as Salesforce and 181 wrap up and until 50 First and Parcel F get underway.

Agreed. My office mates agree that this looks to be about as deep as they're going to go. Just today, they started laying a grid of rebar between some of those piles.

Let's hope they were drilled down into bedrock!
