Perhaps they didn’t want you at the wedding, but mom and dad stepped in and said to invite you.

One of the trends in weddings that has spread for some cultural groups out to the general population is giving a thank-you "gift" to guests in the wedding reception often instead of sending the thank-you cards from about 30 years ago.

It is along the same lines as how a lot of weddings now have special hashtags for social media so the couple can easily find the posts/photos on social media in the days after the wedding. That didn't exist 10+ years ago. It is basically an extension of the idea of the disposable cameras on each table.

In terms of retail, Gymboree closing wasn't a big surprise as this is their second time pushing through bankruptcy. It is interesting though how high end children's clothing retailers like Gymboree as basically non-existent in North America yet seem to have great success in Europe.

The other one to watch is EB Games. Their parent has been in financial trouble for some time barely breaking even. Reportedly two take overs bids have been submitted: one is from the company that currently owns Staples, Hot Topic and Torrid. The other is from the company behind Redbox and Coinstar. The two companies are reportedly in a bidding war. Either way I would expect the dual location stores to be targets for closing (ie KP/Kildonan Crossing and Polo Park/Empress). That is actually a trend that is heavily found in their current operations. They could likely boost per store sales by simply doing some consolidation.

Sending thank you cards? The holiest of traditions? How dare you question that!

It slots right below easter and above september long in the hierarchy!

The chart embedded in the story is from the Retail Council of Canada's December 2017 Canadian Shopping Centre Study.

The December 2018 report is now out with more recent figures:

It also isn't exactly news that Garden City will be first to open the doors on tenants filling their Sears space with Polo and St Vital likely having openings after summer and KP still searching for a tenant.

Polo park drops to 20th, decreased over 6% from last year while most others increased. I assume it's due to the Sears space remaining empty.

KP sears redevelopment should start construction spring-ish. CM and Architect in place.

Is the sears being divided up like the old target space at KP? I wish KP would get a better cinema.

The old Target space I feel is underwhelming at KP. The corridor narrows so it's obvious this is a retrofit situation. And it's empty besides the few big stores. Feels boring and lonely down there.

Just noticed a couple new things in the Garden City area, first is a new Pieces of Paradise next to the Liquor Mart in the former Reitman's space and secondly a new kickboxing fitness place called 9Round, which is next to the Money Mart near Kingsbury. Nice to see more vacancies filling up.

Sort of wondered what would happen since the Edo reno in Polo essentially duplicated what Bento was offering. Seems the parent behind a bunch of those outlets if shuffling things around to bring slightly different banners in.

On my way to HSC campus this afternoon, via the 36 Sherbrook SuperExpress, I saw a Dollarama to the west corner at Sargent Ave.

Gawd they pop up everywhere.
