One South Park, San Francisco, United States
Conversion of former tobacco warehouse and sweatshop into urban loft living

The project rehabilitated a former tobacco warehouse and sewing sweatshop into a premier residential building in this dynamic San Francisco neighbourhood. One South Park contains 35-unit residential homes and a 5,000-sq-ft commercial space. Built in 1926, the structure is located at the corner of South Park, a small historic oval park that anchors the neighbourhood of low and mid-rise buildings in the SOMA district of San Francisco.

Turtle Cove Residential Resort, Kuala Penyu, Malaysia
A symbiotic assimilation between man-made and the natural context allowing both elements to thrive

Kuala Penyu (which in English means ‘turtle estuary’) where the development is nestled is a district located in the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia, on the scenic island of Borneo and about a 2-hour drive from the capital Kota Kinabalu. The client's brief called for the architect to come up with a long-term resort-cum-residential design which addresses the site’s hilly and undulating coastal terrain and to capture both sea-ward and forested views surrounding the site. There are 3 key elements which form the client’s brief - building, local elements and lifestyle.

Redelco Residence, Studio City, California, United States
After being abandoned a decade earlier, Brooks + Scarpa redesign a house on the previously constructed foundations

The architects began work on the project and while in construction (demolition, grading and foundations) the owner, due to circumstances beyond his control, halted all construction of the project. Seven years later the owner returned to the architects and asked them to complete the partially constructed house. Due to code changes, city ordinances and a wide variety of obstacles it was determined that the house was unable to be completed as originally designed.

After much consideration the client asked the architect if it were possible to alter/remodel the partially constructed house, which was a remodel/addition to a 1970's ranch style house, into a project that fit into current zoning and structural codes. The owner also requested that the house's footprint and partially constructed foundations remain to avoid the need for further entitlements and delays on an already long overdue and difficult hillside site.

Mangrove Elite Residences, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
BEAD Architects & Engineers designs new residental development in Abu Dhabi

Three essential threads run through this design: an extraordinary plot in an environmentally sensitive area, high-end facilities for the users, as well as an innovative design. The goal of the design was to surpass even the high expectations of the developer and the end users, with each apartment to be considered as a scarcity amongst treasures. As a 'boutique building' the design reflects a prestigious lifestyle from its broad concept to the meticulously considered details.

Kooyong Residence, Armadale, Melbourne, Australia
A marriage of an Victorian house and a modern extension forming a bridge between old and new

The Kooyong Residence was a renovation and restoration of a grand Victorian dwelling badly in need of repair. Upon persuasive encouragement the client agreed to retain the front elements of the historical building. Following the removal of a previous addition, the extensive brief requested an upper level addition, a garage & pool with greater interaction with the exterior.

peter legge associates: connemara

dublin-based practice peter legge associates have completed 'connemara', a reconstruction of two degraded cottages in connemara, ireland into a single family residence. positioned within the rural countryside, the vernacular structures are constructed with stacked stone, similar to the low lying stone walls which run through the bucolic landscape of rolling hills. serving as the main entrance, a void between the staggered footprints are linked with a transparent enclosure allowing views towards both the irish sea and the twelve pins, the inland mountain range in the distance. mimicking the roof pitch of the original houses, the steel and glass framed enclosure contains the vertical circulation, a stair formed with concrete treads which are secured within the adjacent exterior walls.

Belle Vue Residences, Singapore, Singapore
P&T Consultants' new residential development turns the landscape inside out

Belle Vue Residences located in the high ground of Oxley area, a neighbourhood long known for its lush and serene settings. It is conceived as an organic urban resort with an inward-looking landscape, where the dwelling units are designed as a typology of tree branches infiltrated into the natural landscape.

In the tropical city of Singapore, also known as the City of Gardens, the design concept of Belle Vue Residences is to create an intimate relationship with the natural environment, seeking ways to establish a close relationship with nature. The design integrates landscape and architecture to realise a new kind of living environment that brings nature closer to our built environment.

designed by japanese architect kazuhiko kishimoto of acaa, the 'wind-dyed house' is perched midway upon a cliff overlooking the ocean in yokosuka kanagawa, japan. embedded within the contours of the sloping terrain, this residence is surrounded with groupings of trees, encompassing and framing the building within the landscape. the low profile intervention minimally impacts the environment, along with a sensitive and light appearance. deep roof eaves cast shadows which recede the visual prominence of the structure.

Arizona’s Rusted Steel Desert Nomad House is Surrounded by Towering Saguaro Cacti
by Tafline Laylin, 01/17/12

Rick Joy's terrarium-like Desert Nomad House consists of 3 rusted steel cubes set among a field of towering Saguaro cacti at the base of Arizona's Tucson Mountains. The three buildings of varying sizes make up less than 1,500 square feet combined and each have their own bathroom. There are also two bedrooms, a study, and a kitchen and dining area - all of which have breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
