The project rehabilitated a former tobacco warehouse and sewing sweatshop into a premier residential building in this dynamic San Francisco neighbourhood. One South Park contains 35-unit residential homes and a 5,000-sq-ft commercial space. Built in 1926, the structure is located at the corner of South Park, a small historic oval park that anchors the neighbourhood of low and mid-rise buildings in the SOMA district of San Francisco.

Kuala Penyu (which in English means ‘turtle estuary’) where the development is nestled is a district located in the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia, on the scenic island of Borneo and about a 2-hour drive from the capital Kota Kinabalu. The client's brief called for the architect to come up with a long-term resort-cum-residential design which addresses the site’s hilly and undulating coastal terrain and to capture both sea-ward and forested views surrounding the site. There are 3 key elements which form the client’s brief - building, local elements and lifestyle.

Leigh & Orange Limited completes housing project designed to harmonise with its historic and cultural context

Located in South Lake region of Xian, a cultural city with over 3,000 years of history, the primary task of this project is to harmonise modern dwellings with the local tradition which unanimously illustrates itself in heritages, art works, historical motifs and ornaments throughout the city. The project was completed in early December and houses 375 flats and dwellings.

Redelco Residence, Studio City, California, United States
After being abandoned a decade earlier, Brooks + Scarpa redesign a house on the previously constructed foundations

The architects began work on the project and while in construction (demolition, grading and foundations) the owner, due to circumstances beyond his control, halted all construction of the project. Seven years later the owner returned to the architects and asked them to complete the partially constructed house. Due to code changes, city ordinances and a wide variety of obstacles it was determined that the house was unable to be completed as originally designed.

After much consideration the client asked the architect if it were possible to alter/remodel the partially constructed house, which was a remodel/addition to a 1970's ranch style house, into a project that fit into current zoning and structural codes. The owner also requested that the house's footprint and partially constructed foundations remain to avoid the need for further entitlements and delays on an already long overdue and difficult hillside site.

Upon persuasive encouragement the client agreed to retain the front elements of the historical building. Following the removal of a previous addition, the extensive brief requested an upper level addition, a garage & pool with greater interaction with the exterior.

dublin-based practice peter legge associates have completed 'connemara', a reconstruction of two degraded cottages in connemara, ireland into a single family residence. positioned within the rural countryside, the vernacular structures are constructed with stacked stone, similar to the low lying stone walls which run through the bucolic landscape of rolling hills. serving as the main entrance, a void between the staggered footprints are linked with a transparent enclosure allowing views towards both the irish sea and the twelve pins, the inland mountain range in the distance. mimicking the roof pitch of the original houses, the steel and glass framed enclosure contains the vertical circulation, a stair formed with concrete treads which are secured within the adjacent exterior walls.

bali-based firm word of mouth has completed the 'villa tantangan', a single family residence in a remote location of nyanyi beach on the western coast of bali, indonesia. bordered by the indian ocean and a river to the north, the 6,500 square meter property has views to a beach temple and distant volcanoes. its placement at an intersection of points of interest and the outdoors led to a masterplan of individual buildings arranged around a central courtyard. referred to as 'landscaped architecture', the design encourages dwellers to connect with nature and the built environment.

california practice edward ogosta architecture has designed 'four eyes house', a weekend residence within the desert of the coachella valley, outside of los angeles, california. derived from the specific site location, four towers dedicated for sleeping are oriented towards spatiotemporal experiences including the morning sunrise in the east, southern mountain range, evening city lights to the west and the celestial sky overhead. the top floor bedrooms contain solely a bed, filling the footprint of each tower, which are of equivalent area allowing family members to change based on their personal preference.
