This one is just flying up. They're very much adhering to a 3-day pour cycle, and they're getting ready to pour I think the 10th residential floor. I remember late last year thinking this one would move so fast it would be topped-out by late September......no more, at the current pace I think it's possible this will be topped-out by late July!

A little while back someone commented on the AMLI river north thread that you could tell just from the limited concrete frame up on that one that it's shaping up to be a hideous construction........very much the opposite with Coast - with its rythmic linearity, this is about the most aesthetically pleasing partial concrete shell (at least thinking about downtown Chicago towers) that I can recall....particularly at oblique angles in which you get a sense for the depth of the terraces....

^^THIS. Heading south on LSD really shows the attractiveness of the form of the building and balconies. I just hope it looks as good when the glass comes in.

That was me I think and I completely agree that this building is the opposite. The column placing, the balcony slabs, it's already beautiful, the only reason to add anything to this structure is to make it habitable and I expect the facade and other details will reflect the beautiful simplicity of the structure.

LSE school update

Looks like it will be a GEMS World Academy, the first in the U.S, and it will be huge. The one in Dubai is fairly ugly on the outside, but the interior is unlike anything I've seen. Anyway, I think this school is supposed to go just to the south of the Coast, but I guess we'll have to wait on the official announcement.

Head of school job listing:

GEMSEducation will open its first GEMS WorldAcademy in the United States in September 2013.
GEMS Education is the world’s foremost provider of private education for students from birth through grade 12, with over 50 yearsof experience in opening, managing and operating successful schools around the world. GEMS Education’s network of award-winning schools provides a high-quality, holistic education to over 100,000 students from 140 countries and employs over 10,000 education professionals, specialists and staff.

GEMS World Academy, an independent school, will be located on Lakeshore Drive in Chicago. It will serve students in pre-K through grade 12 with a program based on the best international practices used by GEMS Education’s award-winning schools around the world. The school will be housed in a new, state-of-the-art facility which includes integrated technology, a planetarium, black box theater, swimming pool and parent café. The Academy will seek full accreditation with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB).

Also, I always thought I'd want to live in the ugliest tower in Lakeshore East (the precast one that looks ike it belongs in Vegas) if I moved out there and get to look at Aqua, the Swissotel (Harry Weese if I'm not mistaken) and the other acceptable designs instead of living in the best tower but not being able to see it. Just my opinion.

Do you think that this will still happen? It's a plan to move some tennis courts to the unused spots at Lakeshore east on a leasing basis. And what of the tower planned for that location? Things seem to be pretty strictly planned over there. Is is possible that they mean another location on LSD?

Last week I saw a surveyor on the empty site west of the Tides. This site was originally set for townhomes, so it would seem to be a good site with access to the park in addition to upper access to Columbus and Wacker.

^ The empty site west of Tides / south of Coast seems kind of small for 14 grades of students and all the amenities mentioned, but I guess there's nothing stopping them from stacking all those facilities taller and taller and taller.

I'm not sure all the SUVs coming twice a day for the private school kids will have a benign impact on the one-way LSE loop or the upper Swissotel driveway though.

It would be a big issue since they already have to manage traffic on that drive.

spyguy's post mentioned a Lake Shore Drive location. It's possible that Magellan is trying to develop one of the interior tower sites along Harbor Drive across from the Lancaster. Those towers would not have lake views, and that's a pretty big site. With an architecturally distinctive school building in the center there, it could be an interesting change for the neighborhood.
