Site has changed a bit since I checked it out earlier when it was posted. We could see more of the building's base.

Sad to see so many older buildings demolished in that block but at least the new building looks pretty good. And it seems like they will be "preserving" some of the old character buildings, whether that's full preservation like 150 Elgin, rebuilt wall using original bricks like Ogilvy or a cheap replica like Caplan's, who knows.

That "inner well" shape also suits Sandy Hill. Kind of echoes the shape of the historic Strathcona down the street or some of the classic old apartment houses in centretown.

Although this rez was built and is owned by private commercial interests (Viner), uOttawa will manage it as one of its own. Similar I guess to the agreement at 45Mann, and the Rideau, and the Friel, residences.
They are advertising that they are booking now for September and that it is mainly for students in second year and above. It is called the Annex Residence

From the uOttawa Gazette

University adds Annex residence to its roster

Posted on Thursday, January 25, 2018

A brand new residence will soon provide hundreds of students with a state-of-the-art home. In September 2018, more than 500 students will move into the coed Annex residence close to campus.
“We’re really excited about this new space,” said Michel Guilbeault, associate vice-president, student services. “The increased capacity will help us better meet the needs of upper-year students.”
The new residence, at Laurier and Friel, offers furnished accommodations in units of one to five bedrooms. Each bedroom will have a double bed and en suite bathroom, and every unit will have laundry facilities and a flat-screen TV. Students will have access to a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances.

Monthly rates will cover utilities, including high-speed Wi-Fi, and access to all facilities. Common areas include a fireplace lounge, fitness centre and games room, group and quiet study spaces, and terrace with community BBQ. There will be retail space on the main floor, interior bike parking, plus underground parking available for an additional fee.

With the opening of the new residence, uOttawa will have increased the number of residence spaces for students from 2,900 to 4,700 since 2014. Guilbeault believes the Annex residence will both attract new students and help retain others who like the idea of living in a uOttawa-managed residence for their entire time at the university.

A very large A-frame "house-like" structure is being built on the Laurier and Friel corner. It looks great! Hoping for a coffee house/resto.
