A great year for sports in Calgary?

Outside of the flames it's been a pretty good year I'd say. Well, from the standpoint of our top four sport attractions (top four, as in attendance)

-The Stampeders were the league's top team, and took home the Grey cup.
-The Hitmen were the number one junior team in the country, and are doing well in the playoffs so far
-The Roughnecks finished first overall in the NLL.

The flames have sucked in the last 20 games, but had a good season for the most part.

You're quite right - it has been a pretty successful year. I think, however, that people put the most weight on the Flames (especially at this time of year) and unless they get past the first round, much of the other teams' successes will be forgotten.

And I'm embarrassed to say that I almost totally forgot about the Roughnecks (this year more than others) and just this weekend realized a) how well they did, and b) that their regular season is over.

Unfortunately with the Flames going out in the first round, it will taint an otherwise great year for sport in Cowtown. If the Hitmen can take a Memorial cup, that will make a difference though. Having two nation champs in major sports would make it a great year IMO.

Even with the Flames getting turfed out in the first round, it's been a good year for the most part.

Compare Calgary's big four sports to Edmonton... Only one of their major sports teams even made the playoffs, and just barely....and they're still calling themselves the 'city of Champions'

Interesting stats. Looking at the past champions, the WHL has done really well in memorial cups, especially in recent years. It also looks like Quebec has a decent chance of taking it, as a team from their league has won it three of the last four times they hosted it. This year it is being hosted in Rimouski.
