It makes me laugh that we really do have the reputation that is always rains here. I had an out of towner ask me the other day when it was raining if I was tired of all this rain we get each winter...I had to inform him that it just started raining, I was more worried about how dry of a winter it seemed like we were having. I would much rather take the rain we get here than dealing with Nor'easters every damn winter.

Also, I am not surprised the NYT has already picked up on this, they seem to have a love affair with our city...I wouldnt even be shocked if they have a small Portland department in their new tower.

Long time Portland family.... Keller Fountain, Keller Auditorium. He's more Oregonian than most of us here.

I don't think he's part of the Portland Keller family. He grew up in Califoria and was a reporter for the Oregonian for 9 years just after graduating from college.

^ these forums get so off-topic so quickly. The article I linked to wasn't even NY Times editorial, it was just an AP news feed. I probably mistakenly attributed it to the Times.

Wow, you guys are fast! The images were probably on SERA's site no more than a day or two and here is a big discussion about it. As promised, here are bigger versions of the "new" renderings:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/...2aa5afc8_o.jpg
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/...a44d3c84_o.jpg
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/...84f4afdf_o.jpg

"old" rendering:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2721/...b6c5c684_o.jpg

Again, all four renderings are of the same design and were commissioned at the same time as one set. We just needed to send out one image only for the initial press release, and it was determined that the "old" one was the best overall to describe the design. It could have been any of the four. (no shock & awe, and no conspiracy theories)

Thanks sowat for the link to the NY Times article!

Appears to be the same AP story in all the links (which is not a bad thing, just warning everyone so they don't click on every one of them hoping to see a unique article - like I did).

I found some subtle differences in the stories which may be interesting or not. But the main point is that this building / design is getting noticed.

No problem. If you're interested, here is a BIG version of the aerial rendering:

Very Cool. It turns one of the ugliest buildings into something to take notice of, in a positive way.

Y'know... I'm starting to really like this one. I'm not sure about how it interacts with the sidewalk... that's kind of hard to tell from the pics, but overall, I'm really starting to look forward to this.

What's the timeline? Even after the timeline, I wonder how long it'll take for the... uhm... greenery... to really grow in. 2 years? Have they figured out how they'll trim it yet? I do worry it could get flung down on people during a windstorm, mostly because it looks like the growth will be exposed to wind on both sides (I'm assuming the greenery isn't against a solid backing but rather growing along poles and maybe some sort of webbing...?)

These renderings have me wondering if they will ever (anytime soon) redevelop/retrofit the parking garage in front of the federal building..

Oh, God....now I know it's getting late!
At first glance, the last rendering above looking from the SW (with Mt Hood in the background) looks like the building is ready to graduate with it's cap and gown on!

Seriously, it's growing on me also.....I'm looking forward to this building, even with the hefty pricetag. It looks like this tower will go from 270' to about 290' with that angled roof. Man, I really had to get a second glance at the unique window design.....don't know if I've seen that concept around here.... Anyone?
