SLCDA Confirms return of the Hoberman Arch

Sounds like Hatman was correct about the arch. It will compliment the new Gateway Sculpture well.

Apologize for the large size in advance, pulled this from Reddit. Added the spoiler tag.

I love how close the airport is to downtown SLC, but is not in the way of allowing for the construction of ever-taller skyscrapers. Also, the landing paths over the suburbs are relatively quiet, and the take-off noisier paths are over the emptier portions of the Great Salt Lake. What a location coup for Salt Lake.

Total opposite of my hometown of San Diego, where the airport is even closer to downtown, but literally no room to grow, curfews after hours since the plane noise landing and taking off is so loud, and not a long-enough runway for bigger jets. But there's no better view when landing... pro tip, if you ever fly to San Diego, ALWAYS get a seat on the left side of the airplane.

So, is the Hoberman Arch replacing this:

I'm assuming not since it's already constructed, or was being constructed, right? But what a total downgrade if it is - the Hoberman Arch is ugly.

No, they are separate installations. The arch is at the exit, this is the entrance Gateway Sculpture.

This is funny considering San Diego has six (seven counting one that is currently u/c) buildings taller than Salt Lake's tallest - and three more equal to Salt Lake's (which is currently under construction).

Regardless if there's no actual height limit due to the airport, Salt Lake has imposed an artificial height limit that's not far off San Diego's official one lol

The Gateway Sculpture has a date and a name.

Salt Lake Tribune:

The arch isn’t the last large work of art that will land at the airport. Huether said installation will begin next week on a multistory piece, “The Peaks,” near the airport’s entrance.

Yah San Diego has a 500ft above sea level height limit for pretty much all of downtown thanks to the FAA. There's speculation about whether a building at the southern end of downtown would be outside that limit and could go higher, but that's why the max building heights vary a bit but all look very similar when seen from afar, they all create a plateau.

This is not true. I live in West Valley City directly over the flight path, and depending on the day, the take-off path is in the south direction. Pretty sure the wind dictates what direction the aircraft take off and land, but seems like they are taking off in the south direction a good 40 percent of the time. It is a lot noisier than the landing approach heading north so you defiantly know when this happens. Definitely a noisy area, but you learn to tune it out and eventually don't even notice it. Just grateful SLC isn't like LAX or ATL.

Compared to Denver:

So, yeah, I think SLC is hit harder with the airport sitting where it sits. Or at least maybe similar to Portland? I don't know. Not quite familiar with the area east of the airport.

I'm happy the arch is back, but I am kind of bummed it isn't moving.
