I looked up some of the broadcasters, ESPN, oddly bought the US rights. Looks like ol' Kodi will come into play on this one and Ten Sports (Indian subcontinent?)

Don't the Commonwealth Games actually get some of the top athletes in their respective sports to actually attend the games rather than the B level ones ie. swimming, athletics? Perhaps I am wrong about this.

I noticed that St. John's is getting an ECHL team. That city is on a neverending carousel of teams and leagues... AHL, QMJHL, ECHL, the occasional minor pro basketball team...

British Columbia has confirmed it is no longer part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup bid.

Wonder if this clears the way for Edmonton, or if they'd rather just choose Toronto and Montreal. Edmonton's stadium is the most World Cup-ready out of the bunch.

^ As much as fun as events like the Olympics and the World Cup are, it's clear that the IOC and FIFA impose demands on hosts that are getting harder and harder to justify. It's hard to blame BC for telling FIFA to bugger off.

This is probably the most curious part:

I'm not sure what the difference would be between the two.

The best thing that could happen IMO is for countries to reject FIFA's demands and force them to right-size the event. Use existing infrastructure, make it about soccer again instead of FIFA empire-building.

2026 seems to be crumbling from within. Canada will regret not having the foresight early to just do this on its own (Canada vs Morocco would have been a good shortlist). You can sense the folly that FIFA will just sit back and toss it to Morrocco. FIFA wants back in Africa, and this would be the closest shot they can make it happen. The whole Qatar slave labour issues, expanded tournament, and this blunder is going to leave a stain on the WC.

The CSA signed off on cost overruns in 2015, but with the men's FIFA tournament, they are pushing that on the gov't

There's a lot of questions about how Morocco is going to pull of an expanded World Cup on it's own, though. I don't see how Canada could do the +40 plus team tournament, especially when there's probably less appetite here to build a new stadium for the finals than there are in most countries.

Canada could easily handle it with existing infrastructure. Whether that meets FIFA's empire building needs is a separate issue altogether.

I still think it's pretty stupid that Canada-USA-Mexico are submitting a bid together. USA is getting 90% of the games and the spotlight will be on them. Mexico has and could easily host the tournament again, so not sure what benefit they stand to gain.

If I were head of the CSA I would not have joined in on this bid. Have a go at it alone or maybe consider partnering up with the States but the format as of now is pretty laughable. Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton will be lucky to see 3 games each.

Canada could host if FIFA didn't care about games being played at McMahon (for instance), a ridiculous amount of teams playing in each stadium, or the Final being played in a stadium that seats 61,000. But that's not going to work.

The last three World Cups used twelve, ten, and twelve stadiums respectfully. That's with a 32-team tournament, not a 48-team like 2026. Canada has nine potential stadiums: four that are big enough currently and five that could be expanded to host the games (excluding Rogers Place, because it is baseball-only now). If we use that few stadiums, that means more teams in each city, which means we need accommodations... something cities like Regina and Winnipeg wouldn't have enough of.

We probably could have done the 32-team tournament, as long as we built new stadiums in Calgaryand Halifax, and renovated Olympic for the Final. But 48 is too much.
