Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal Hyperloop

The Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal Hyperloop route has made the top 10 for the first route to be built.

"According to Hyperloop One, the proposed route between the two cities connects Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto and would “create a Canadian mega region as much as a quarter of the country’s population.”

If built travel times would be about:

Toronto to Montreal (640 km) in 39 minutes
Toronto to Ottawa (450 km) in 27 minutes
Ottawa to Montreal (190 km) in 12 minutes

First use would be cargo, then passengers once the tech is proven safe.

Ottawa to Toronto in 27 minutes would seriously change my life. Business wise but also for visiting my parents, sister and her family. It would make day trips to T.O. a regular thing. And 12 minutes to Montreal would be amazing. But there would be even less incentive for airlines to fly out of Ottawa's airport.

Agreed. We could then reclaim the airport's land for other purposes.

Unless Montrealers start flying from YOW instead of YUL. It's a 12 minute ride after all.

Crystal Beach ninbys will block the hyper loop from Ottawa.

Setting aside the cost/etc. challenges, what sort of acceleration would you need to get speeds like that?

Assuming constant acceleration to the mid point (and then constant deceleration at the same rate to the destination) as well as a straight path (not a good assumption), from Toronto to Ottawa (from the map on the CBC article):

d =225 km (half way)
t = 13.5 min (half the time)

since a = 2d/t^2 = 2 x 225 km / (13.5 min)^2 = 2.47 km/min^2 = 0.686 m/s^2 or about 0.07 G

In case you are curious, the top speed would be:

v = a t = 2.470 km/min^2 x 13.5 min = 33.3 km/min = 2000 km/h

I'm curious as to why it's called a Toronto-Montreal line instead of a Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal line. Almost all of the American bids mentioned all the cities along the route in the name of the line.

That is a lot of Gs for civilian use. That would be like taking a roller coaster or drag race car to Toronto.

Any express between Montreal and Toronto should not pass by Ottawa, it's too much of a roundabout.
And I can think of many subway lines (in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa) which would be more useful to more people than such an express train.
Anyway, it's only a pipe dream.
From Ottawa's perspective, why not start with straight highways to Montreal and Toronto?

I Found an error in my conversion from km/min^2 to m/s^2. It is actually about 0.07 G so much more reasonable.

The top speed is still the same though (which is approaching mach 2).

I'm not a religious man, but I'll be praying for this.

I've read a few articles but haven't seen any timeline for a winner to be announced. Has anyone seen it?

Good Day...

I have no basis for this, but I have to think that given different consortiums have bid in different countries, and for different projects, that they might be thinking of licencing or dealing a piece of the action in several projects at once ?? (Hope springs eternal ?!?!)

I don't think there is any proprietary technology owned by Hyperloop, vactrains have been hypothesized since the 1950s. Anyone that has an enourmous pile of money and a huge tolerance for risk could proceed with or without use of the hyperloop trademark. Without a major breakthroughs in electricity generation, superconducting materials and tunnelling technology I doubt this ever gets past the test track stage anywhere, although I could see China building one for an airport link as they did with maglev.

I can't believe people still think this crap is actually real and will deliver anything in our lifetimes.

Do people still not get that this was a Musk play to tank the California High Speed Rail, threatening to impact Tesla sales in its home (and most profitable) market?

Since I'm sick of rehashing everything that is technically wrong with the Hyperloop, I'll let youtube do it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNFesa01llk

It's not the Hyperloop isn't technically feasible. It's just that it would take ridiculously amounts of money to make it as safe as air travel. All these current Hyperloop teams pitch fancy pods, but none of them are discussing the amount of engineering it would take, and the constructions costs necessary to make it certifiable for regular human travel.

Ottawa has as much of a chance of landing a Hyperloop as it does Amazon HQ2.

You think? At least we know Amazon HQ2 is going to happen somewhere. Hyperloop is just a pipe dream at this point (no pun intended ).

Musk's businesses are not based on sales. They are based on ideas and making people believe this will be the future and invest. Why on earth is Tesla the US' most valuable car manufacturer? They barely sell any cars. This project is just another one of Musk's scams to separate investors from their money.
