Not to be negative, but it is important to recall that the original version (1155 ft) and the second version (1250 ft) (both identical) are a somewhat different design than design #3 which is what we are actually getting- which is more conservative in the use of volumes. For instance, the lead in photo on punchydj's construction update (above) is of the 1250 ft version. What we are getting is still pretty neat, but not only is it shorter, it is less aggressive in the use of volumes (particularly the upper half of the tower). It's a shame because this is in my opinion the best and most cutting edge design of all the new crop of buildings. This is the one tower that truly deserves be the tallest in NY.

I wonder how many normal people (not us) even know about this magnificent tower?

I have to say, I do see people looking at it a lot. That may have a lot to do with being in such proximity to MOMA (and being an expansion) where more people are likely to be aware of architecture.

Nice film, here's my comments:
  • I like how you started out with the renders
  • There were some video issues with images flickering/ghosting
  • Would have liked some commentary with your thoughts
  • It seemed a bit rushed, like you had a strict time limit
  • Vertical shots added too much letterboxing on the sides

Overall: Good job, looking forward to your improvements next month!

This one's a bit of a slow riser, huh? I guess quality takes time.

This is actually my fav skyscraper design - period.
I hope the developer feels inspired to create even more skyscrapers with this beauty and quality in the near future.

It's this tower that establishes the city apart from other very large and successful cities with breathtaking skylines.

I would buy a model of this tower if it becomes available to go along with my other NY models.

Here's what they had to say about that again...

......The other unusual feature of 53W53’s diagrid is what it is made of. Nouvel’s original design was intended to be built in steel. But the floor-to-floor heights of a steel structure would have limited the number of storeys too much, so WSP | Parsons Brinckerhof investigated how to create the same aesthetic in concrete instead – “the first time that a diagrid structure of this magnitude and complexity has been done in concrete,” notes Oliveira.

Aside from the complex structural gymnastics, the team also spent considerable time evaluating how 53W53 could actually be delivered. Because of its complexity, construction will take more than five years, around double the programme for a more conventional design. One of the biggest challenges was designing the nodes where different structural components would join. Reinforcement for perhaps seven or eight elements had to fit into the same node, and then the concrete had to be able to flow freely to enclose it and produce a sound structure.

Oliveira’s team worked closely not only with the architect but the construction team, which included commissioning a mock-up of the rebar. “Rather than just coming up with solutions that looked good on paper, we assessed the constructability of the job too. That’s not normally part of the engineer’s role but this is such a unique building, it needed a unique approach.”

But every inch is worth the wait...

Yep. I'd really love to see a 1250 version with original specs as a "big brother" in Hudson Yards. Won't happen for a number of reasons, but it would be cool. This is going to be great, though.
