It's water pooling in two excavation pits (International Village and the site of the two condo towers on the south side of Keefer). If I recall correctly, there was some delay after the pits had been partially excavated and the ensuing Vancouver rain created virtual lakes.

Here are two shots from 1996:

Klazu you have inspired me to buy a tri-pod for my Rebel T3i which I haven't really used in 2 years. I took some shitty cell phone pictures today which looked terrible. What type of lens would you recommend for landscape shots? Also, do you have any small pointers for taking shots?

Here's a collection of Vancouver Archives pics from the 1970s when Blood Alley and Trounce Alley were revitalized.
I can't say I've ever been there.

Click on the item list on the left margin for individual pics.

Funky streetlights on Mainland St. along the then ShowMart Building (now SAP).
Note there was parking on the 2nd floor back then.

Mt Seymour would be my guess, but not sure.

Maybe stormwater (or even a Combined Sewer Outfall)?

The Mount Seymour skiing slope area, I'm pretty sure. I know it's Mount Seymour.

They're also building the seawall in other photos. Any chance it could have been the pontoons for this wharf? In a later photo the part near the shore is exposed while the rest is under water.

WOW!! thanks for these, could look at them for hours!

Guessing the undated ones of False Creek were from about 1976 as the first residential developments, Charlson Park etc., were completed about 1977.

The red-roofed building in the second photo contained a large restaurant and lounge called OnDines at the Marina, I ate there with my mom a couple of times.

In the third pic, that's the view of downtown I remember as a kid, always liked the way the cluster of office towers looked back then and last time our skyline was dominated by office towers vs. condos.
