hkskyline's 2018 in Bogota, Colombia

My friends wanted an off-the-beaten track exotic vacation in South America, and they decided to give Colombia a go. With safety in numbers, I was more than happy to join. Once feared for its drug and crime problem, Colombia's capital is seeing a renaissance. However, the recommendation still is not to venture around the historic centre, La Candelaria, at night.

1. Bogota and Colombia seems to be making a mark on the international world of graffiti. Many artists have tried to express their thoughts in the city centre, to the extent that there is even a free walking tour about it. This would be the perfect group activity to get my bearings and to gain confidence in venturing out.

8. Some of these murals survived thanks to co-operation from the building owners who let the artists spray their talent all over.

11. You can tell some of the paint is still fresh from the news channel.

12. Here, a graffiti-filled public space is not perceived as a dangerous ghetto to be avoided. Kids were happily playing in this one.

14. Unfortunately, gentrification has not been successful in some places yet.

18. Bogota's downtown is not really wall-to-wall skyscrapers, and they have a relatively small skyline.

21. A good way to see the huge urban expanse is to take the funicular uphill. The air is even cooler up here although the weather pattern changes abruptly and quickly.

26. Back in the city, the streets are bustling although there were some weird questionable characters every now and then. Stay vigilant and everything is going to be OK.

32. At these heights, beginning signs of altitude sickness take hold. Take it easy, find a safe place to break every now and then, and don't pack your itinerary too extensively.

41. Easily identifiable as tourists, taking the BRT seemed a bit risky when extra hands can roam within the crowds. Luckily, Uber was available in the city and prices were very affordable.

I love Bogotá. Amazing city! Great photos, though they barely scratch the surface.

Bogota looks great. It sounds a lot like a less hectic Mexico City, which is something that sounds quite excellent to me - any truth to that?

I thought Mexico City is far more grand with huge colonial buildings. Bogota seemed relatively smaller and less crowded.

42. North Bogota is a wealthy suburb and is considered a safe zone. Zona T is home to many restaurants and shops, offering a good base to explore the city.

47. Seems all the guidebooks talk about this large restaurant that seems to double as a club at night.

Yes, I also covered Medellin, Cartagena, and Tayrona National Park. More photos from these places to come!

There are similarities, though Bogota is poorer, rougher, higher altitude (so generally cooler) and the food isn't quite as good. I think Bogota has a more interesting core, though, and is much cheaper.

Bogota looks very interesting. The only large Latin American cities I have visited are Guatemala City and San Salvador. It reminds a lot of Guatemala City, San Salvador is less urbanized. Many of these cities have rumours to be very crime ridden and dangerous but they are not that unsafe in reality, at least not daytime.

That funicular ride gains some serious elevation! How long does it take? Thank you for the interesting tour.

I recall it wasn't long - just minutes.

Some street valley views of Bogota is just gorgeous, photowise, but I am not going to step foot on that land, for safety's sake.
