Just drove down there. The new diversion isn't open yet. Traffic is still on the old road.

The opening has been postponed.

Shifting of traffic onto the new permanent section of the The Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway between Howard Avenue and Huron Church Line that was planned to take place over night has been postponed.

Officials with the Parkway say that lighting in the tunnels is unique and that crews are working to ensure this feature is fully operational before shifting traffic.

A new date for the traffic shift will be announced later today.

Beautiful day for some photography. Here's the view from the Bethlehem Ave. connector:

Same place looking in the other direction:

Tunnel girders at Labelle St.

At Grand Marais Road:

Culvert over Grand Marais drain:

Tunnel at Huron Church Line. Photos from this place are getting harder and harder to get. When they close down the street it might be impossible.

^ That tunnel section is starting to take shape nicely. I could be wrong, but by the way the outside walls are angled down to the road deck the way that they are, the tunnel segments could be wide enough for an eight lane cross-section should the highway ever need to be widened.

Yeah I was wondering why they did that. Leaving room for widening makes a lot of sense. I was thinking it was to keep the wall propped up or to serve as a form for the concrete or something.

I wonder if they'll leave it sloped like that. If they do I don't see there being much room in the tunnel to pull over in case of emergency. If they do leave it they'd have to cover it with something or pave it or something. They wouldn't just leave a pile of gravel in the tunnel.

Judging by the animations it will be concrete, and stay on a slant like that.

I'd say the angles will be concreted as well.

There are quite a few structures in the Toronto area where the concrete down slopes surrounding the bridge abutment have been removed with the earth retained by a concrete wall in order to add additional lanes through the structure.

You can see how the bottom of the embankment was retained underneath of the structure here:

http://goo.gl/maps/KQKDV

In this case (this is the QEW/403 in Oakville), the structure was designed for an eight lane cross-section, but was not designed to be wide enough for the buffer zone between the HOV and general purpose lanes, the the concrete angles beside the abutments were modified with a vertical wall.

No problem. My pleasure.

BTW, question for you: When you shoot your road videos do you have a way of fixing your camera to the dash?

I've never found a good way. I always have to keep a hand on it to keep it from sliding around. I've had it fall off and ruin a video more than once.

Some more pics from the local paper. The opening of the new section of Highway 3 was delayed but it is now open.

The stretch that opened Wednesday includes two bridges, a tunnel and a couple of stoplights to help access St. Clair College and the Windsor Crossings shopping plaza. The college has a new entrance about 75 metres west of the old access point.

Just drove it and it's awesome. It's really starting to get that "holy shit" vibe.

I highly recommend people check out that link. There are tonnes of aerial pictures, too many to post and the video is great.

Found this blurb on the wikipedia page for the new bridge

Quote:
The Canadian contribution will be repaid from bridge tolls collected on the Canadian side, and no tolls will be charged on the U.S. side.
Tolls are collected before you cross the border. So we will get charged before we cross to enter the US, but Americans won't get charged to enter Canada?? We are paying for the bridge. We shouldn't be getting charged on the Canadian side

No, it means all tolls will be collected on the one side, the Canadian side. that includes tolls for boths ways. This is how it is currently done on the Ambassador Bridge I believe.

If that's true I would just cross on the free side then use the Bluewater Bridge to cross the other way back for ~ half the price!
