I do HR administration at the company I work for, which has offices throughout California (corporate headquarters is in the Los Angeles area, where I work), and a new hire out of our Sacramento office lives in a town I've never heard of before: Rescue, CA.

Some other unusual town names in California are Cool, CA and Weed, CA.

Weed's city motto is "Weed Like To Welcome You."

i've always thought the name Peoria sounds kinda like an STD.

"man, i took that bar skank home with me last saturday night and now i have a scorching case of Peoria".

Another odd name for a town...

On my last drive to Santa Cruz, I saw this sign:

In Arizona desert cities have hopeless names:

Tombstone
Why
Hell
Nowhere
El mirage

In the northern forested areas they are nicer:

Happy jack
Strawberry
Snowflake
Santa Clause

Then we just have head scratchers
So-hi
Top of the world (it’s not)
Planet
Surprise
Date
Dateland

Yes they are different

Buffalo = Beau Fleuve (beautiful river)

Altoona, Winnepeg = probably native name for the places, I imagine

Two names that stick out for me:

Eighty Four in western PA
Jersey Shore in north-central PA (quite a way from the actual Jersey shore)
