2017 is New York's 5th best mark in its entire history and the best mark since 1997. 2017 is the highest in New York metro's entire history, at least for what there are records for. Houston just had its best year in its recorded history in 2017, it's immigration was never higher any year prior to 2017. Los Angeles' 2017 number is a shell of its former self from the 2000s, the 1990s, and the 1980s, back in the days, like 1993 when it used to go off for + 140,000 immigrants in just a year.

2017 immigration stats for select Canadian CMAs:
Toronto: 86,525
Montreal: 44,615
Vancouver: 29,875
Calgary: 17,895
Edmonton: 15,925
Winnipeg: 11,835
Ottawa: 8,705
Saskatoon: 5,940
Regina: 5,300
Halifax: 3,745

Miami is extremely impressive. I mean, everyone knows Miami gets tons of Latin American immigrants, but those are crazy high numbers considering they really don't have much global representation.

Miami MSA appears to have more annual immigration than the entire LA CSA.

Washington's numbers are impressive too. It's quite a diverse area - more than many think.

Many of these cities are truck stops before they move on to greener pastures.

The top 7 are all coastal cities with a long history of international immigration -- no surprise there.

And then there is DFW at #8 ahead of Chicago, Phila. Seattle and San Jose. That's impressive.

I agree Dallas is pretty impressive, but Dallas is bigger than Philly, and multiples bigger than Seattle and San Jose, and not much smaller than Chicago these days.

And all Texas metros are major destinations for Mexicans.

Is this gross immigration or net (ie deducting people who move out of those metros to go live in other countries)?

Denver's numbers are remarkably small for a booming city. The very high level of growth has been overwhelmingly driven by non-immigrants.

All true -- this might spill-over into neighborhood metros like OKC.

As I read the glossary, it is net international immigration, i.e. counting both out and in.

https://www.census.gov/glossary/#ter...ionalmigration

This is apparent from the fact that a few metros on the chart have negative net international migration.

https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/...xhtml?src=bkmk

Looks like of all places Lake Havasu City, AZ has the lowest net international migration at -105.

orlando's kind of impressive here too, with higher numbers than bigger places like seattle and atlanta (and almost double its neighbor of tampa)

Why is Chicagos immigration number so low relative to its size in metro area? It has a long history of immigration and economy is huge.

I wouldn't have guessed. I still feel like a lot of immigrants are moving here all the time, which is a good thing, of course.

I took this picture this afternoon.

In Chicago I saw a Mexican guy eating carne asada last week.

So we still have some left too
