Ive read alot of bitching (as usual) about this project. I guess the question is...what is it a more budgeted standard hotel should look like? How "architectual" should it be to please the critics while still being economic enough to build in this soft economy? Frankly its fine for what it is. Just a standard middle budget hotel supplementing a larger facility. Could it be better, sure...could it be worse, yes...could it stay a parking lot that everyone would then bitch about too.....YES. Pick your battles...a 22 story "annex" to the JW is not one Im gonna waste time complaining over...especially if its filling in a dead zone during a recession when most projects are dead.

I would be very dissapointed if it was on figeroa but considering the location kind of behind LA Live its not really that bad. I would like to know when they are going to starat developing those massive parking lots across the street from LA Live on Figeroa.

As long as it doesn't turn out as dull as that disaster they built in Houston (I think it might have been an Embassy Suites, but very similar in location, type and program).

Perhaps the press releases are not helping here. What's being offered in terms of a project course has become so speculative in this thread as to seem somewhat insubstantial as to the real development.

^ It all depends on the materials used, but for me it looks like a lateral move. I really despised the dual asshats on the original design, and this one addresses that to some degree (though I'm not a fan of the mechanical box on the top, but what are you gonna do?). I will say that this design is a bit more contextual with the Ritz/Marriott across the street, but with a vertical fenestration. Of course this can backfire by making the area too visually busy. And if they use stucco for those white panels, this will really look like shit in 5-6 years.

What I like about this is that it only takes up half of that block between Georgia and Francisco, so something else will eventually be developed next door. Which I believe was originally planned to be offices or studios, but fell through when AEG couldn't get a braodcast company to commit. Hopefully with the economy picking up steam, we'll see some sort of mixed use office/hotel/residential tower proposed next door in the 30-40 story range (I'm being very, very optimistic here, guys).

Some more renders from Brigham's Blog/CRA:

The west view, or from the 110 freeway. The plot in the bottom left corner is the rest of the block. This pool will be rendered pretty useless once that neighboring plot is developed:

The hotel entrance on Francisco Street. Olympic Blvd on the left:

Close-up on Olympic street frontage, which will include a restaurant/lounge with outdoor seating. A 1,000 sq. ft. plaza on the corner sets the hotel pedestrian entrance back from street a bit. Could be more green, in my opinion:

The design is just fine I don't know why everyone is so apathetic about it! I'm just happy Downtown Los Angeles is getting SOMETHING. South Park should look great in the future when more development pops up, density like this very welcomed.

What's with all the whining? It looks better than 99.9% of the other motel proposals I've ever seen. I'd love it if the Residence Inns in my hometown to looked that nice. Are you guys really upset with the design, or upset over the fact that it's an 'ew...gross...motel'?
