This highrise in Milan is probably the best example I've seen of an actual "forested building".

If the buildings are rentals, there may be a better chance of the greenery being successful.

I don't know, I'd say the spots that are tough to maintain are hanging off the side of the building and only benefit the unit that gets to look at it every day. Bigger central greenspaces are easy to maintain and much better benefit. Including those on common area rooftops.

This would be a nightmare for people with arachnophobia.

No thanks

Looking at the ShapeYourCity project for 1780
https://www.shapeyourcity.ca/1780-e-broadway-rz

it notes in the "Key Dates" section:

Application received
November 24 2023

Q&A period
May 01 → May 14 2024

Q&A information session (Italian Culture, 3075 Slocan St), 4:30-7:30pm
May 07 2024

Urban Design Panel
May 2024

Though it hasn't made it onto the Urban Design Panel's agenda website yet:
https://vancouver.ca/your-government...ign-panel.aspx

Both May dates don't currently list any items, but that could change:
May 8, 2024
May 22, 2024

Hold onto your hats for a wild night of nimbyism on May 7th? Or perhaps it will be more muted as more people see the need for revitalization at this location?

Has anyone who frequents the area noted a fresh batch of ‘No Safeway Mega Towers’ signs?

That's par for the course. Agendas for the UDP, like most of Vancouver advisory committees, are only released about a week or two in advance.

I haven't, but it could still happen.

I think most of the nimbys might just sit this one out finally. It's clear that no matter what they do, this site is going to get developed, and is absolutely needed, and as time goes on, the project only gets bigger and denser in scale. The provincial government will be watching this one closely me thinks.

I'll probably attend on May 7th in support of the project.

Don't overestimate NIMBY critical thinking... or underestimate their delusions stubbornness optimism.

This.

For the same reasons they are desperately trying anything to stop Sen̓áḵw – literally anything at all – they will not give up here, at least not until the first shovel goes in ground.

Doesn't mean they can do anything to stop this now. But one thing's for sure, this development proposal will forever be a case study in how people with power, money and time at their disposal can abuse process to try to impose their will on the rest of society. The number of times this has been delayed, reworked, and reworked, and reworked. We are years behind now and I just think of all of those people who could have had a place to live in that time.

In news that will likely surprise no one, the Broadway-Commercial Safeway rezoning has once again been delayed. While the applicant has decided to submit yet another revised proposal, the reason for this decision hasn’t been revealed.

Indeed. I feel like their are forces beyond that of the earth realm that is keeping this project from finally moving forward.

I think I'm going to burn some sheepskin parchment paper in the Safeway parking lot to get this thing going.

Careful, you might get a ticket from Diamond Parking in the mail for that. Two months later of course.

Why is that, if I may ask? I am not challenging your statement in any way, but just trying to understand the rationale and logic behind it. Thanks a lot.

With any luck it will be an even TALLER redesign and proposal revision and this time it will be the NIMBY's who'll be practially begging the city to move this project along and forestall it from getting any taller with any more delays.

A professional landlord owning the rental building is usually a lot more active and competent than a strata at managing a building.

Mayor Sim wants to follow the Burnaby model, so the resubmission will propose 60 plus story rental buildings.

How can we encourage this .... measuring contest more? Get Vancouver's first supertall built here.

Edit: If we truly want to have a "megatower" here, megatall skyscrapers are 600m+. The Broadway-Burj-Commercial anyone?
