I personally have never enjoyed going down to the states just to shop, seems like a waste of time for me, and I have never enjoyed crossing the border anyways, so the extra stress involved really makes it not worth it. Along with other aspects as well (for example read the differences in trans fat from American products to Canadian ones, will make your head spin).

I do consider it a success if I only gain 1 pound per day in America. Though, a personal horror story, I was in Las Vegas from the 27th of April - May 1st and came home
13 pounds heavier. Luckily it was all water from the box of table salt in each and every dish. But yes, going to America is... troublesome. However, when talking about being worthwhile for shopping, I really am referencing only high end items. If the difference is $2 - $3 like most "small" things, well F that. However, in the high end the difference can be hundreds and even thousands depending on the item.
But, even for items people traditionally buy, like clothing, the difference is quite huge.
