The ironic thing is that bridge barely had any suicides to begin with before the fence was built

Um, no it was one of the more popular ones to jump from. Where do you get your facts?

Um, no it actually wasn't.

Got my "facts" from the newspaper.

"The lives lost on Burrard Bridge amount to .08 per year in the last 10 years."

https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/davidf...b_9371218.html

Need more? How bout this?

"On average, about once a year someone leaps to their death from Vancouver’s Burrard Bridge. Compared to other area bridges, it isn’t the favoured spot to publicly end one’s life; the adjacent Granville Bridge and the Lions Gate Bridge are more often chosen for suicides."

http://www.nationalpost.com/m/soon+s...533/story.html

So um, ya, once again, it wasn't.

It helps when you put context on things:

Quote:
The city had no plans to put suicide fencing on the bridge until Dr. John Carsley, a medical health officer for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, pointed out that a 2008 coroners’ inquest had recommended such structures on all major bridges. He’s been alarmed at the high number of bridge jumping deaths. According to the B.C. Coroners Service, since 2006 at least 102 people have died jumping off eight of the region’s most accessible bridges. That doesn’t account for those who survived, or suicides that were not witnessed.

At the top of the list is the Lions Gate Bridge, with 33 deaths; at the bottom is the relatively low Cambie Bridge, with two. Seven people used Burrard Bridge.
Maybe loss of life is not important to you, but VCH is calling for barriers on all bridges.

That's a dream they can keep in their pants. Nobody except a few people looking for votes and building contracts want the barriers. One because they are expensive and two as shown they can be ineffective and unsightly.

That has nothing to do with perspective. You're moving goalposts. The Burrard Bridge is not among the most popular bridge for suicides. That was the statement, and is factual.

Whether or not loss of life is important to me, or anyone else is another matter all together, and not relevant to the issue of whether or not the Burrard Bridge in particular is popular with people committing suicide which it clearly is not as the facts have shown.

I'm not quite sure where to post this

Quote:
Authorities had to tranquilize a wandering black bear that caused a major traffic headache in New Westminster Friday morning.

The bear was spotted clambering over the railroad tracks near Braid Street and Brunette Avenue during rush hour, forcing police to temporarily close the busy intersection in all directions.

Conservation officer Alicia Stark said the bear probably lost its way while walking along the Fraser River.

"We've got lots of rivers and bush around here, so I think he was following the river in his natural area and found himself in the industrial area where he's not supposed to be," Stark said.

The bear, which appears to be about a year old, was likely out looking for food, authorities said.

Conservation crews were hoping to shoo the animal back toward the river, and did manage to steer him far enough away from Braid and Brunette to reopen the intersection, but the bear came back.

They eventually corralled the animal into a dense, brushy area near the SkyTrain tracks, and shot it with a tranquilizer dart after it emerged from the bushes.

"We just want to make sure he's staying a good distance away from people," Stark said.

Seven police and conservation officers carried the sleeping bear back to a vehicle so it could be relocated.

There are effectively no shoulders. How is this even a proper (semi-) freeway? Is the conspiracy that ICBC demands such design to slow drivers down true?!

Not to mention the design of the overpass. I've never seen such value engineering in other provinces/states

Indeed. The mandatory green wall though: pure genius.
