Yeah.. if I travelled around Europe and asked random Europeans on the street "hey, do you know where Winnipeg is?", I'd probably be most likely to get "yes" answers in countries where ice hockey is a popular sport (Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Russia, Slovakia, etc.) Same goes for Edmonton as well.

Interesting, I never even heard about this.That would be cool for the southeast of the province to have a small boom. Steinbach is already the second fastest growing city in the province (17% 2011-2021) and is projecting to grow to as much as 100,000 in about 50 years. A small natural resource boom could make that possibility more realistic.
A bigger Steinbach could give Winnipeg a "friend" in the region considering once you're outside the city its mainly small communities of 2,000 or less.

Just in case anyone is curious, average annual 5-year growth in CMA with 10-year average in brackets for million person CMAs and those considered in the poll:

1. Toronto +95,000 (+91,000)
2. Montreal +42,000 (+41,000)
3. Vancouver +35,000 (+36,000)
4. Calgary +41,000 (+34,000)
5. Edmonton +37,000 (+32,000)
6. Ottawa +16,000 (+18,000)
7. Winnipeg +13,000 (+10,000)
8. Quebec +6,000 (+8,000)
9. Hamilton +7,000 (+6,000)

So, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Hamilton all growing slightly faster over the past 5 years compared to their 10 year average. Vancouver, Ottawa and Quebec all growing slightly slower over the past 5 years compared to their 10 year average. For the most part, changes are relatively insignificant.

Yes, it's Stine Back. It's a German word, literally meaning "Stone Brook". In German, when vowels appear together, you pronounce the long version of the latter letter, so Steinbach is Stiiiiinebach, and if there were a town called Stienbach we would call it Steeenbach
