Greater Stockholm (pop 2.3 mil) has had 4 murders so far and the city (pop 750 000) has had 1.

The latest was a deadly shooting in the neighborhood Tensta. An area of 17000 inhabitants that together with neighboring Rinkeby (pop 16.000) is one of the hot spots for gun-crime in Stckholm and Sweden.

These two areas had 18 recorded shootings last year which is very rare for a suburb in northern europe.

FLINT, MI -- Flint saw nine fewer homicides in 2018 compared to the year before.

There were 35 killings in the city last year, the lowest since 2014, according to MLive-The Flint Journal figures.

Not 100% certain as im basing this info of Crime mapper because LAPD hasnt released a report yet, but i think LA city is at 8 up to Jan 16. That would be a tremendous start to the year, if true. LA County seems to be at 14

Either way, that the US's safest big city has a murder rate roughly equal to Canada's most dangerous for the year isn't particularly surprising or unusual. The only thing that's really changed are the cities that occupy each position.
Where are those population numbers from?

The official population counts are:

Toronto (2016 Canadian Census) 2,731,571
New York City (2017 US Census Estimate) 8,622,698

The Toronto figure is two years off from 2018 and the NYC figure is one year off from 2018. Now both cities are growing in population but I find it hard to believe Toronto grew to 2,970,000 in just two years, maybe that is a figure from the Toronto government or urban planning agency but I think Canadian Census vs. US Census is a better apples to apples comparison.

Austin finished 2018 with 35 murders in the city and 46 in the metro.

The first and second murders of 2019 happened the same day in Austin and Cedar Park.

That's a higher murder rate in 22 days than any Canadian city had for the entire year of 2018...

For chicago, through 1/24, total homicides:

2017: 48
2018: 34
2019: 19

Drops of 60% and 44%, respectively.

It's sounds kinda ridiculous to say, but staying under one murder per day has been a small victory for chicago.

If only it could be January all year long.
