It looks stunted w/o the four spires, I think.

They would have come into play more from a distance that up close. You get more of a sense of scale on the bracing sides.

This one turned into a bit of a snoozer. I feel the project on the whole is a disappointment. The ghastly antennae on the Freedom Tower was the start of a long slide towards the mundane and away from the spectacular.

Exactly.

People forget how abysmal the twins were when they were built. They only became iconic as the years progressed, and symbolic after 9/11.

it looks nicer from the air, with the reflection from the city + the river as opposed to the sky for some reason.

Sometimes pure size does matter.

Well, if we're going by size, 1WTC, along with TWO other buildings 1,000+ and one just shy, you should prefer the new complex.

It's because there were TWO identical massive monolithic structures.

If nothing else, together, they were certainly unique... and an intimidating presence at the tip of the island.

The new WTC buildings, while in many ways superior, just don't have 'it'.

What's the Freedom Tower? The one in Miami?

You have a long way to go before you can say that. This complex isn't complete at all. It's like judging the original complex with only one tower present.

I'm in the camp that the new complex, although very, very nice, doesn't have the iconography that the original complex did.

The new WTC seems much more multifaceted and deconstructed compared to the original two bars in the sky: ||

(The dominating, ultra-bold presence of the two towers would have been very difficult to recreate, in any case. It's also very understandable why they're not rebuilding the old site as it was.)

However, from the street level the new complex *blows away* the old one.

i think it came out fantastic, even scaling back on the bracing. I think that worked out better actually, i do think dropping the spires was a mistake though

NYguy - that view!!! Where is that from? I know the general area based on the proximity, but can't quite place it.
