I think it is to avoid to have things falling into the tracks.
The hoods begin in the area where the escalators are closer to the tracks.

The main issue is not suicides but littering, I think.

Tram Express Nord Tangentielle Nord
Construction work in Epinay sur Seine

Tangentielle Nord, now called Tram Express Nord is the construction of a light rail line using Tram-Train rolling stock along the northern part of the Grande Ceinture (big belt) railway line closed to passengers since 1930 and now used for freight train.

A new bridge is under in construction

Epinay-sur-Seine station
The station will provide a transfer between the RER C, the Tram Express Nord and the T8.

We can see the new platforms

View from the RER C platforms

Google Earth 3D view of the station.
The view is older than my pictures but recent enough to see some construction works.
The view is centered on the Grand Ceinture line.
You can also see the construction of the T8, there is approx 150m between the T8 platforms and Tram Express Nord and RER C stations.

Charles de Gaulle – Étoile
Modernization of the Champs-Elysées ticket hall

I have seen this only today, a week before this hall had its original 1970's cladding.

Why did they choose a black painted ceiling... it feels so dark in there... unless, of course, that was what they were going after.

I think they did a snazzy job with the Charles de Gaulle - Étoile ticket hall. The black ceilings and light rods remind me of the Châtelet RER concourse, though thankfully not nearly as dreary.

Charles de Gaulle – Étoile
New screens replacing the older small ones.

Charles de Gaulle – Étoile is the first station with those screens in the central section of the RER A but some other stations located in branches have new screens for some time.

Speaking of LED screens, I still like those for their bad-ass, old school text mode display lol

Well, it's good to have both text and graphics modes.

Those LED screens are not old at all, in SNCF network it is placed instead of the LCD screens where there is no protection from the elements.
This is the conventional SNCF screen

Note that the screens on my previous post the IMAGE system is RATP, so it will be only in the RER A (excl Cergy/Poissy branch) and the central and southern RER B.

Stairs that are open to the elements? doesn't it rain? Tho I guess rain is far easier to deal with than snow.

I think you misunderstood. He said they were "old school" meaning old-fashioned. You know, designed to look older than they are to capture a former aesthetic/style.

Auber, why are you so dirty?
2014/04/02 Fabrice Pouliquen

What disease has the Auber station? In the 9th arrondissement, the RER A station displays a bad face to the 250,000 passengers who use it every day to get to Opera, the Grands Boulevards stores or one of the many connections it provides.

Infiltration problem

Brown streaks flowing along the walls and form an unsavory foam in some places. Sometimes it's even on the ceiling that foam appears, forming "stalactites" above travelers.
A seal is placed on the ground to collect water dripping from the ceiling in the central hall of the station. "The technique is frequently" say the sellers of the station. This is not the only example of tinkering at Auber. Cables also hang from the ceiling and Karima, a saleswoman in a perfumery face access to the RER A, shows a piece of cardboard covering a hole in the wall in front of his shop.

This decay is partly due to water infiltration, a disease that affects 20% of metro and RER. "Auber station, very close to the water reservoir beneath the Opera, is particularly affected, said Jean-Christophe Archambaud responsible for policy cleaning RATP. The water then flows along the walls causing a lot of limestone crystallizes and dry. "So this brown stuff!

An elevator that smells like urine

But in Auber, dirt is not limited to these infiltrations. Cleaning is also weak. Gobitz Bernard, vice-president of the Association of transport users (AUT) Île-de-France, even took pictures to alert the STIF (Syndicat des transports d'Île-de-France). "The advertising support along the escalators between line 8 and RER station hall were covered with cups, cans and several inches of dust."

Rubbish have since disappeared. However, what does not disappear is the strong smell of urine in the elevator making the connection between the concourse and line 3. "It's a shame, say Florence, a passenger. I take the elevator for five years and this odor is still present. You have to pinch the nose during the ride. It is very painful. "

"Efforts are being made"

RATP says "is aware" of these problems. At Auber as elsewhere. "Major efforts are being made since 2006 to fight against these infiltrations, says Jean-Christophe Archambaud. Forty million will still be invested between 2014 and 2015 to seal 50 stations. "Auber station benefits. New siding, more waterproof, is being installed on the ceiling, along the corridors leading line 9 docks RER.

Driven by STIF, which strengthened its criteria for assessing the state of the network, the RATP has also deployed a new market for cleaning the subway early October. On paper, this translates to more operators in charge of cleanliness in stations, bins emptied more often or the general cleaning every month of the busiest stations. "Whose Auber", says Jean-Christophe Archambaud. "These deep cleanings are an opportunity to strip surfaces with which travelers are in contact and waxing floors docks."

But Auber obviously need more. However, the RATP has been conducting operations since late 2012 "Coups de propre" in some of the busiest stations on the network. "In that context, we are updating the painting, we repair the tiles, we install LED lighting ..." explains Jean-Christophe Archambaud. Madeleine station was right there in late December and the Charles de Gaulle station right now. "And Auber? Not on schedule yet. However, the station hosts many tourists come to do their shopping in nearby stores. As a first image of Paris, you can find much better.

Entrance of the station designed by the German artist Tobias Rehberger.
This entrance will be integrated in the ground floor of a new building designed by the Chinese agency MAD founded by Ma Yansong and the Christian Biecher agency.

Construction starts on Paris Line 14 extension
Wednesday, June 11, 2014

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Paris on June 11 to mark the official start of construction on the 5.8km northern extension of Line 14 from St Lazare to Mairie de Saint Ouen.

The event was attended by the mayor of Paris Mrs Anne Hidalgo, president of Ile-de-France regional council Mr Jean-Paul Huchon, Paris Transport Authority (RATP) CEO Mr Pierre Mongin and Ile-de-France transport authority (Stif) president Mr Patrick Devedjian.

The extension will relieve the heavily congested section of Line 13 north of St Lazare and will have capacity to carry up to 40,000 passengers per hour. It will interchange with RER Line C, Transilien (suburban) Line L, and light rail Line T3b, which is being extended from Porte de la Chapelle to Porte d'Asnieres.

The €1.38bn project includes the construction of four new stations, Pont Cardinet, Porte de Clichy, Clichy Saint Ouen RER and Mairie de Saint Ouen.

RATP and Stif ordered 14 MP05 rubber-tyred driverless trains from Alstom in 2012 to expand the Line 14 fleet in readiness for the opening of the extension in 2017.

Line 14 will ultimately become part of the Grand Paris express metro network and further two further new sections are planned which will increase the total length of the line to 30km, extending it north to St Denis Pleyel and south to Orly Airport via Villejuif

Great news. I sense good things coming to Saint-Ouen. Hopefully they won't act as blind nimbys and take a real advantage of this big opportunity given to them, because line 14 is one of the best of the entire network.

The new express subway lines of Paris, with their completion dates. The map was published yesterday, following the press conference by the French prime minister on Monday.

The map shows the 208 km (129 miles) of new lines and extensions planned before 2030 (mostly in tunnels).

After the T6 last saturday, the 9th parisian tram line opened today.
Say hello to the T8.
Unfortunately, the opening was at 4 pm when the sun begins to set.

Saint-Denis - Porte de Paris

Pierre de Geyter

Saint Denis - Gare, this where the T8 meet the T1.
The is the first crossing between two tram lines in Paris.

After Delaunay-Belleville where line splits into two branches.
The switch had a dysfunction, the driver had to move it manually.

The branch to Villetaneuse-Université

Blumenthal, notice the Z50000 train of Transilien H in the back.

Les Mobiles

Les Béatus, there is a junior high school here, a lot of excited kids.

Rose Bertin, the center of Épinay-sur-Seine with a shopping mall.

Épinay-sur-Seine - Gare

Épinay-Orgemont, the last stop with an island platform.
