I like the colors and general design, but as Proof Sheet pointed out that rock formation doesn't exist anymore. I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before it slips into oblivion as a symbol of NH.

I'm curious which (currently still used) plate designs are the oldest? Quebec's is about to turn 40 years old. Now that I think about it, we're probably one of the oldest among all provinces and states.

Alberta's current default plate has been in use since 1984.

Great thread, I love researching and looking out for different plates in North America.

The NWT plate is, IMO, the most unique and cool looking plate. It just stands out and the slogan is simple and not trying to sound cool.

Alberta dropped the whole "time to update the slogan and design" issue right? Apart from the 'support our troops' plate mentioned earlier, the current standard rendition has become sort of iconic. Can't imagine they would ever deviate from the 'Wild Rose Country' slogan, but wouldn't surprise me if the design changes in a few years.

Ontario's "YOURS TO DISCOVER" goes back to 1982, I think. The French variant (TANT À DÉCOUVRIR) was introduced in 2008.

Yes, talk of changing the slogan and design is done for now. Spending money on something that's not necessary wouldn't go over well. Do most people even care what a license plate looks like? What I'd like to see are digital plates that eliminate the need to have to get new tags every year (or two).

They're not all that uncommon in AB. Seeing plates from the Yukon are way rarer.

Yeah I saw about 5 NWT plates in the past few days. Having been in Alberta for two years now, I think I've the Yukon plate maybe twice. I very rarely ever see them.

But you're not allowed a front plate for Quebec but can have a UK plate (often on Jaguars) an old Italian plate (I see that on Fiat's or Ferrari's) or an old German plate (VW, Mercedes etc) that is a totally different shape to the Quebec plate.

Yes I have seen the polar bear plate on a real vehicle in real life. It was ages ago though.

You also see them in places like bars sometimes.

Wasn't there a fight at one point between Nunavut and the NWT over who got to keep the polar bear plate?

Which 90% of the time seems to be ST-MÜ-69 or something like that. I have no idea why or what that means but I see it all the time.

If someone can tell me what it means it will resolve one of my life's great mysteries.

Our plates are actually very boring.

PEI used to have a very nice Anne of Green Gables plate, but it didn't last long I think. Too bad.

Actual local culture - what a concept!

I saw an NWT plate in London back in about 1997.

Much more recently, I saw a Yukon plate in Toronto about a year ago.

At the other extreme, I saw a Mexican plate in London about 9 years ago. I don’t remember which state it was from.

Quebec and Ontario have equally boring license plates that have only seen minor changes over the past few decades.

Generally, the larger the province/state, the more basic the license plate design (Texas and California are also dull), although there are some exceptions. I always liked New York's license plates - both the current one ("ghetto yellow with broke blue writing" - MF Doom) and the two before that.

Quebec's is a good example of less is more when it comes to good design. Helvetica is almost always a nice touch.

Saskatchewan's previous plates were similar in that regard... I always thought this was quality:

I'm a big fan of Saskatchewan's current plate design. The slogan is cool, font is nice and the wheat in the middle isn't overpowering like in the previous edition.

Ontario and Quebec really do have dull plates but as the two largest provinces it isn't a surprise as hipster duck said.

I like this one though

The website thing isn't uncommon for some US states.
