Hopefully soon, even if its just some 10-20 story buildings. It would do soo much for the reputation and image of the city

Yeah exactly. I'm actually very surprised that no oil companies have at least regional offices in downtown Fort Mac. Even just a couple 12 - 15 story office buildings plus a couple lowrise condos.

The question would be. . . why? I mean, does Red Deer have anything like that?

Of course they do. Red Deer has several office towers and, for a city its size, a pretty decent skyline.

Don't quote me on this, but it MIGHT be a code share/interline with Westjet?

There is a lot of debate going on in Fort McMurray about a new downtown arena.

What I have been hearing is that the land has already been purchased.

Wow, and they're talking about light rail too? Impressive. I'm sure that Fort Mac can afford it!

Sorry, but why would they be able to afford it any more than any other city? I would argue the opposite - there is probably a lot of pressure for all kinds of infrastructure there and there is only so much tax money. The royalties from all the oil sands developments go to the province rather than the city.

Fort Mac Updates

Water’s Edge

Mac Island expansion Shell Place

Keyano College Oil sands Power & Process Engineering Building.

Edinburgh Tower

YMM Air Terminal Building

And last but not least this is what happens when everyone fails to do their job.
This was an emergency evacuation because of structural defects and no-one has been allowed move back in. It is now abandoned and quite a few owners are no bankrupted.

Peter Pond mall was just sold to H&R REIT a huge investment trust that owns The Bow amoung other major real estate holdings and other malls.

This could be a chance at a significant upgrade in the retail options or perhap even a future massive re-development/expansion.

Hopefully the mall sale includes yhe strip mall that NV is in and perhaps even the casino so they could level both for a expansion and multi-story parking structure.

Pretty big news out of Fort McMurray last weekend:

Quote:
CFL fans in Fort McMurray, mark June 15, 2015 on your calendars. That's the day the Edmonton Eskimos will play the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a pre-season game at the currently under construction SMS stadium at Shell Place on MacDonald Island.

"I think for the community it means that we know what our first major event at Shell Place is going to be," said MacDonald Island Park chief operating officer Tim Reid. "But I think for all of us that have been involved with Shell Place, what it means is that vision that we told everyone about a year ago; about coming to a stadium surrounded by your community and bringing your family here to something that is really a world class experience is coming true."

The game, called the Northern Kickoff, will be nationally televised on TSN and it will be the most northern game in league history. Reid said the Calgary Stampeders were also in consideration to play against the Eskimos, but the Roughriders seemed to be the best fit.

"When we talked about it, we thought that Saskatchewan and Edmonton were more representative of our community," said Reid. "You know, they're two great clubs with fantastic traditions and both of them have huge presence in the Fort McMurray area. So as much as we thought about the idea of bringing Calgary up here, at the end of the day, this was always going to be the Roughriders and the Eskimos playing on June 13."

Eskimos president Len Rhodes was also on hand for Friday's announcement. Rhodes said the Eskimos consider themselves the CFL team that represents Northern Alberta and they want to reach out to fans in Fort McMurray.

"This is a key, strategic step in the process," said Rhodes. "We are coming out to reach out to our fans. We are not waiting for our fans in Fort McMurray to reach out to us. We're going to engage the community. This is a first step to a long-term relationship and our hope is that everyone in Fort McMurray becomes an Edmonton Eskimos fan if they aren't already."

Rhodes also announced a $10,000 donation from the Eskimos to help with flood relief efforts in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

"We felt it's very important to not only celebrate what we're going to do on the football side, but we couldn't ignore what people are actually going through in the day-to-day," said Rhodes. "So we made a contribution of $10,000 to help emergency services find some solutions for the people that are displaced."

Edmonton Eskimos season ticket holders will get a chance to buy their tickets starting on June 17 and 2,000 tickets have been set aside for the presale. Tickets go on sale for the general public on June 28 at 10 a.m. at www.esks.com.

With no room to grow, Canadian town evicts oil sands companies
The Canadian town of Fort McMurray is booming largely thanks to the nearby oil sands industry. Now the town needs more housing and infrastructure and has nowhere to put it, so its taking back the land it has leased to oil companies.

By James Stafford, Guest blogger / July 30, 2013

The Canadian town of Fort McMurray, population 76,000, is the heart of Alberta’s oil sands largesse--but the town is bursting at its seams with nowhere to expand because the land surrounding it is owned by oil companies.

The government’s answer to this is to cancel all the leases on 22,000 hectares of land surrounding Fort McMurray—effective immediately.

In an agreement announced on 26 July, the government promised lease-holders fair reimbursement, with the municipality purchasing the land from the province over the next five to 15 years.

This acreage is more than twice the size of Fort McMurray today, and the idea is to make the town two-thirds the size of Calgary. (Related Article: What Happens When the Oil Runs Out?)

For Fort McMurray—whose population is expected to double by 2030 thanks to the very oil sands industry is must now evict—it is a necessity. The town needs more housing and infrastructure, but has nowhere to put it.

“This lack of land has tied our hands when it comes to planning future development, but it’s also led to all sorts of challenges from sparse housing options, limited commercial retail entities and a non-existent space for social profit groups: churches, community halls, store fronts, just to name a few,” Mayor Melissa Blake told reporters on 26 July, when the decision was announced. “Today that all changes.”
