This has been my thought too - I love outside the box thinking, but this is really hard to follow. Is this about bikes or trains? The best thing for bicycles is for a human to ride on them from point A to point B - not for them to be hauled around the city in giant luggage compartments like expensive accessories. If 90% of the commute can be accomplished on a train or streetcar within a few blocks of your destination, then why even bring your bike?

The best thing for a bike city is less cars. That's why Portland is called a bike city because most of the streets are narrow. California has three lane streets everywhere and also it's too hot to bike.

25 years ago few people biked in Portland as a primary means of transportation. The transformation of so many streets to take out car lanes and put in bike lanes is fairly recent.

In California Davis, despite the summer heat, and Santa Cruz are big biking towns.
