What the? Is the whole thing going to be covered in scaffolding?!?! Looks like they're building a square skyscraper rather than a lattice structure.

I can't wait to see this in person. It's going to be amazing to see the view from the upper observatory.

Japanese buildings are done that way. The scaffolding is covered by a fabric. I think it's to prevent any damage occurring on the ground by falling objects, but I'm not sure.

Think of the scaffolding system as wrapping paper. A present waiting inside when completed.

According to posts at SSC, now the scaffolding will grow around the tubes, instead of around the whole structure.

What a weird construction site. And all the little houses. How far is it from Tokyo's main business districts?

WOW! The scale between that structure and the homes/businesses in the foreground is astonishing!

Aleks - I am not an expert on Japan (only spent a little time there), but most of the cities are made of very dense, but short buildings like this, with dozens of larger clusters springing from train stations, major roads, or other significant places. You could be a few blocks from a huge skyscraper, and nothing around you would be more than 3 stories.

Tokyo has some really great standalone skyscrapers- I, for one, just love the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, and the Mid-Town Tower, sculptural and solitary, right in between the Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Tokyo Station business cores, and surrounded by a sea of standard buildings. The Tokyo Sky Tree will be much like that, uncrowded by other massive structures for at least a couple of decades.

This is great, Tokyo is the most futuristic city on earth, it's clean and crisp. This tower is one massive addition to the skyline, it's moving along very quickly. Maybe we should hire the Japanese to build the Freedom Bunker in NYC.

Damn! This one is rising fast! I wonder why not that many people comment in this thread? I mean, this thing is 2000 ft tall, it will be one of the tallest towers on earth AND in Japan, who would've imagined!

I wonder how people will feel being on top of such a tall building in an area so famous for earthquakes.

Holy shit - thank god the Japanese are aces at welding and steel fabrication - these pieces are INSANE!!! Almost like they went out of there way to make something as complex as possible.

It wouldn't be japanese (and thus, awesome) if it were otherwise!

to bad they cant have any real supertalls because of earthquaks

if it were not for that they would of had buildings taller then the burj right now.

Not at all true. There is nothing stopping them from an engineering POV from having a 2000', 150-floor tower. Just political, economic, etc. issues.

Max height changed to 634 m?

Per this document http://www.rising-east.jp/dl/pdf/2009101602.pdf, it looks as though the max height of this tower was changed from 610 to 634. If true, that would make it one of the tallest structures in the world behind the Burj Dubai I think?

Hmm... I'd have malec check it out since he's our 'international man'

It'd be nice though, I'm not sure if we'd be able to see a difference but at least it's taller!

Yes, it says that the height will be 634. Then gives some long explanation on why 634 is a significant number (it's easy to remember ).

IF it is approved, they will proceed with the new height.

Tokyo Sky Tree Facility
Maximum height of 634m, with antenna. The first observation deck at 350m, the second observatory at 450m.

Will include Broadcasting facilities, shops, restaurants, etc.

Completion set for late 2011, with a Spring 2012 opening.
