Yeah. Definitely don't want Detroit getting credit for this project, for which they are not putting up cash (rather, barriers in the form of the assholish owner of the Ambassador bridge).

Not only is Canada funding 100% of the bridge and infrastructure on the Canadian side, but we are also paying for the customs plaza and highway connections on the American side. Harper sure can be generous with our money when he wants to!

And if we're paying for everything, why are we naming the bridge after some Canadian who defunct to the US to play for the Red Wings? Do we not have an actual Canadian from Windsor who could be honoured instead?

Remember, we're also getting toll revenue from this thing. We'll make the money back in a few decades.

Something other than another cable-stayed bridge would be nice.

^ Are you just talking about aesthetics or do you feel they're lacking in terms of their engineering?

Here's a bridge I've driven over 5 times, 3 in the past two years. Anyone want to guess which bridge?

ANSWER: Nisutlin Bay Bridge in the Yukon over Teslin Lake. This is the longest bridge on the Alaska highway.

Neither really. It just seems that every iconic bridge these days is cable-stayed. It'd be nice to see something a bit different.

probably not, naming bridge after a sports star that's noteworthy not only to all Canadians but to people of Detroit is a good sell, considering it's linking Detroit and Ontario. That's probably why the hockey player from Saskatoon is an obvious choice.

Just feels like we're kneeling down for Detroit, like we owe them something.

Isn't the funding coming entirely from Canada? Why should the name have to reflect anything from Detroit?

9.1 meters for the waterway, between 2 and 10 meters for the St Lawrence. ( between Nun's Island and Brossard)

You can catch sturgeon by hands there:

You sure don't see many wooden road bridges around nowadays!

Greater Vancouver has a lot of nice bridges. The Lion's Gate is an obvious one although my favorite is still Burrard. I like cable-stayed bridges as they seem to have an elegance to them.

The George Massey Tunnel is a disaster and has converting lanes like the LGB. Problem is northbound in PM rush-hour the traffic is heavy but you literally have 5 lanes merging into one, it's absurd. I don't think there is any question that something has to be done but I don't agree with a new bridge.

The provinces idea of "feedback" on what to do with the crossing means they have made up their minds. A new bridge is not required as all they have to do is build a parallel tunnel to the current ones and when the new ones open they can do any necessary repairs or code improvements to the older current ones. Nearly half the traffic is actually only going one km...........the Ladner cut off to Richmond's Steveston road so they could just built a separate tunnel for those commuters and the problem would be solved.

It would cost a hell of a lot less which means a lot when we are probably going to be paying $5 for the one-way toll. Why don't they do this? It's called the Port of Vancouver and it's political influence.

The Port wants the entire tunnel gone so it can have deeper ships using the Fraser. If we are having to go thru all this extra expense for the sake of the Port then why isn't the Port making up the difference in the cost between a new twinned tunnel and a new bridge? You will have to ask the politicians who's palms are getting greased to get your answer.

If anyone is curious about what those red structures are for, here's a video that demonstrates how the major pieces of this bridge will be assembled:
