I'm surprised that there isn't more protection around the western tower base for the port mann. Seems like a ship could easily damage it, considering its in the middle of the river.
Do large ships actually go that far up river? I thought the farthest they'd go would be New Westminster.

The Port Mann Bridge project is drawing to closure with the old bridge now completely disassembled. One is now also able to access the area below the new bridge, offering a good view of this amazing structure.
Not sure what all these structures are for.
There is still a water main project underway until end of the year.
It seemed to me that everything is open now when I drove it on Saturday. There is not much to see or take a photo of on the ground, so someone with a drone should go a take photos of the spaghetti junction. Looking forward to someone doing that.
All that grey pipe is the rain water leader. Drainage. Interesting that it is going directly into the water. Here most new structure require the water to be diverted to a retention pond first.

The new Walterdale Bridge in Edmonton (Renders here) is well underway, with completion scheduled for next year. They recently floated part of the main arch up the river and are getting ready for the first of 2 raises.

"The destructive effects of automobiles are much less a cause than a symptom of our incompetence at city building" - Jane Jacobs 1961ish
^ If the city ever approves it. It's been on the radar for fifty years, and in the early 1980s there was even provincial funding prepared. The city was able to negotiate a sweetheart deal of 90% provincial funding.. but the city backed out last minute.
There's a fear that it will only lead to more sprawl in the east end of the city. One councillor is convinced that once built, no matter what the city zones, the OMB will use the bridge to overturn any sprawl restrictions (ie: there's capacity to grow, so grow!), and has said he will vote against the project so long as the OMB has the power to override municipal decisions on urban growth boundaries. The downtown business lobby is also against it as without that bridge, east-enders have to pass through downtown to get to the rest of the city. The bridge would provide a direct link between the eastern and western suburbs bypassing downtown, which downtown business groups fear could lead to less people shopping in the core. The latter reason was the main reason the city rejected it in the 1980s.
There's no doubting the project's merit as a capacity issue. The existing crossing downtown is jammed, and the gridlock that develops around it is the only genuine traffic problems this city really has.
Kingston recently invested a considerable sum into improving transit links to the east end, which used to be complete shit, hoping that will make a dent in the traffic. We'll see.

The following slides are from the Technical Presentation document.
I think some of you may be very happy about the Steveston Interchange configuration.
Note Bridgeport transit ramp from HOV to a new(?) road under the Oak St. Bridge
- Like the Government Road ramp (but could be elevated).
No Blundell Rd. interchange
Check out the weaving ramps at Steveston interchange!
Note ramps from the bridge approaches to Rice Mill Road (2 ramps?) and River Road.
Roundabouts at Highway 17A.
New ramp from northbound 99 to eastbound SFPR. Note that they are still building direct access ramps to/from Hwy 17A, even though the main route is now Hwy 17.
Why was the crossing done as a tunnel in the first place if it's feasible to build a bridge (which is almost always cheaper), and what's changed between then and now?
