I have only seen pictures of Sao Paulo and the city looks amazing. From pictures it is clear that SP has a high density of highrise buildings (although it seems they are not very tall because of height restrictions). Not only that, the highrise density seems to be spread over a huge area in case of Sao Paulo.

I have not seen that kind of highrise density in Mumbai except in some areas.

Almost none that comes to mind. There have been a few proposals but nothing concrete.

However there are plenty of 4 - 10 storey glass facade office blocks under construction all over the city. Don't know why corporates in India prefer the huge mid-rises because it seems to be a waste of space.

The MTNL Tower is the only one that I know of right now which is 16 storey and will be completed by this year.

Midrise office blocks like this are preferred by most people.

I said festive commieblocks. Ultra-low-cost housing. Indian cities don't have 'ghettos' like you find in the West.

Not all blocks are that loud. Some are your average commieblock... but I'd rather have a loud building than that

Since I can't edit Suncity's post, I'll just post any new building renderings and u/c photos not in the first post, here. My comments in blue.

Again, this is by no means an exhaustive list -- less than half, really. Just the projects we can find renderings of on the net. We have a crapload of tiny photo thumbnails from real estate websites of towers u/c, but no information or larger renderings of them. And these are all buildings concieved and u/c in the last year and a half, that we -- sitting literally across the globe away -- only know of!

There are also now confirmed reports of several towers planned or u/c reaching past the 70 storey mark, one of them being Mumbai's 1st commercial skyscraper, due to be completed by 2007. And more rumors of the 100+ storey tower are flying around.

Sadly no renderings of these

Dude, the slums in Mumbai will take a very long time to get rid of. There are just so many of them, and millions living in them.

Dude, all new construction is on former slum/mill land.

In the last year, slums in Mumbai were reduced 20%. That is several million people who formerly lived in slums and now do not. This is only the first year of the Indian construction boom, and the economy continues to skyrocket.

No one is saying the slums will evaporate overnight. India is not a China where bulldozers come in the middle of the night, land seized and sold to the highest bidder and people forcibly relocated to commieblocks. The poor have rights, a voice, and a legal process. The instrument of law and of rights will necessitate the re-housing process. Not the land mafia.

So bro, sorry, but as drawn out as the legal process is, it is not infinately so. If current trends continue -- and they will only accelerate -- Mumbai will be largely slum free within the next ten to fifteen years, as gigantic an effort as it will be.

It's always strikes me as incredible how people who are so ignorant of the ground realities feel the instinctual need to disparage anything related to Indian development. Cognitive dissonance?

Jai, where in my commentary did you see any malevolent disparagement of Indian development. I think it is a perfectly accurate asssessment of what is going on in Mumbai, there are a lot of slums but they are slowly being gotten rid of. Aside from being less wordy, it's exactly what you said. Some people are just a little too sensitive.
