Unfortunately Ottawa is not so close to the fingertips of those other places
(I wish it were!)
But yeah, Buffalo is not bad at all. It has suffered over the years, but it's still a functioning metro of over a million. Even downtown Buffalo is not bad. It lacks the vibrancy and shopping/dining/fun options of this area, but it's very clean and safe, and there are plenty of office workers on weekdays. Of course the architecture downtown is top notch, some of the best late 19/early 20C stuff in North America.
