I've only tried a few of the places listed in that linked article, Drift Café & Vista Lounge is my favorite, I usually go to 2nd Ave Grill or Congress or...Taverna Italian, the one Oprah chose last time she was in Saskatoon,
but I might try the Ayden restaurant that Chef Dale Mackay operates when I come to Saskatoon in a couple weeks for http://www.phantogram.com/ concert.

I just found out that the Blue Moon in St Petersburg, just outside Kitchener, is closing as a restaurant after 169 years. The original inn/tavern opened in 1848. It was my favourite place in the Region for rolled ribs, among other schmecky delights. I am sad, but my arteries are pleased!

Gamberoni, on Yonge north of Lawrence, is one we patronize at least once a year. Very good Italian food at reasonable prices.
Excellent Toronto restaurants that have, unfortunately, closed over the years: Turtles (delectable food; atop the old Four Seasons; closed long ago), Pangaea (wonderful food, but pricey), Didier (probably the prettiest interior I have ever seen in a restaurant; amazing food; maitre'd, girlfriend of chef, a bitch), Corner House (cozy location near Casa Loma; stellar food), Oliver's (on Yonge north of Eglinton; closed ages ago).

My favourite restaurants in the Winnipeg area:

1. Salisbury House
2. Stella's

Both have "all day breakfast" menus, but also have beef meat dishes.


"Sals" as its generally known, mostly caters to Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, while Stella's customers are mainly Millennials.


Some Sals are "fully licensed", while all Stella's sites are.

Has anyone noticed lately the major American chain restaurants have slowly been closing in Canada.

The Prairies still seem to be fairing the best for some of the favorites though like Olive Garden, Outback, Applebees, Old Spaghetti Factory and Chilies.

Chilies closed several Alberta locations this month but still has its two main airports and Banff locations...

plus there's still the Saskatoon location, the Tex-Mex Capital of Canada.

Stella's is amazing. I still haven't had anything as good as their blood sausage special that day, and ours is genuine. Theirs was presumably frozen and imported. And their breads were just... ungh. It was exceptionally good breakfast food. It was good enough to have some NYT article ranting about this breakfast place in Brooklyn that's $300/plate for brunch.

Sal's is like a Denny's or Newfoundland Bagel Cafe. It's decent but it's... shouldn't be in the same list as Stella's. I always thought it was strange Sal's was in the middle of that cool bridge. It would be like having a Smitty's at the top of the CN Tower.

The menu is OBSCENELY cheap for St. John's.



The owner (not pictured; former council candidate, and somehow an FB friend) is one of the hottest guys I've ever seen in person. And the staff is lovely.









And then off to Coffee Matters for dessert (they had an almond cake at Boca but none of us were interested).

Over the Christmas holidays we tried out the splashy new Shift restaurant in foyer of Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.

With The Guild opening in Calgary a year and half or so ago, as well as properties in progress in Edmonton, it's clear that the well-known Toronto-based restaurant group, Oliver & Bonacini is poised for coast-to-coast operations in the next handful of years.

The newest notch in the group's belt comes by way of the restaurant, Shift, which is located in Saskatoon's brand new (and stunning) modern art gallery, Remai Modern.

Serving from morning to night, Shift aims to offer pure contemporary Canadiana with a preference on prairie ingredients and dishes, of course. The menu celebrates regional Canadian cuisine with dishes like Paul's Perogies with butter, bonito, bacon and sour cream and blackened Saskatoon Lake Diefenbaker trout (pictured above) with slow-cooked roots and sumac aïoli.

For those of you that haven't heard, Saskatoon's long awaited new Remai Modern Art Gallery opened 3 months ago, I haven't seen the entire gallery yet but it apparently has one of the world's largest Picasso art collections.

^The Remai is a huge game changer for Saskatoon. It might be the best art gallery west of Toronto. The NY Times actually put Saskatoon on its list of top 52 places you want to visit in the world in 2018 because of the Remai.

The Gallery had recent pictorial spread in both Wallpaper* Magazine and the Travel Channel, also Wall Street Journal ran it in it's arts and leisure front page in September.
Azure Magazine included Remai Modern in Top 10 Best Buildings of the World in 2017.

Saskatoon at number 18, & the only Canadian destination, in recent New York Times list of places to go in 2018, The Saskatoon Art Gallery was praised along with it's Alt Hotel & the city's award winning airport.

Never even heard of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto. While the Remai is fantastic it's worth noting the actual main art gallery in Toronto, the AGO, is over 4x the size.

I think the Remai might have a legit shot at being considered the 4th best.

The AGO, Musee des Beaux Arts de Montreal and the National Gallery in Ottawa are our top 3, and everything else is kind of a notch below.

Still, the Remai may end up being a "clear 4th", and that's quite something for a city the size of Saskatoon. I've been to the Art Gallery of Edmonton and the Vancouver Art Gallery, and neither of them was really that impressive. I think there's something decently-sized in Quebec City and there's the McMichael Collection, Audain, etc., but you get the idea.

The great American and European art museums are definitely a notch above our top 3.
