Downtown can be much better with a mixture of historical and more modern buildings and more nightlife. I feel that the leadership has always held S.A. back.
It's true that we are the Goodwill of the country; those cabins were set to be demolished in Tennessee and someone here went to a garage sale and got them (not really, but you get my point.) I think that if we had modern buildings, it would only make the historical items seem more historical. The Alamo doens't seem so old when you have a bunch of hotels that look old enouugh to have been the place where the Mexican troops slept the night before they attacked.

Do you know how many log cabins exist in the world? Have you been to Tennessee? There are about a zillion. What makes these so special? Why not put some teepees in River North? Is there a we can get some Igloos at the Pearl Brewery? Add some of those geodesic domes from I-35 south of Dallas transported here to sit in front of the TOA?
I know, let's get all of the different types of obsolete structures and cluster them around the Hedrick Building. Then, we'll register the whole thing as an historic space. It may not be historic to us, but it must be to somebody.

I think they got away with that either because it was before rules, its not technically in a historical district, or It was built in 1983 and I guess they never thought it was going to be a historical district, with One Riverwalk, and all the glass at the IBC and Whitacre Tower facing the river and being built after that.
With the HDRC in place, you would think that downtown would look more like this.

The team’s review of the Master Plan has concluded, and this public meeting will provide an opportunity for neighborhood stakeholders to review and provide input on the recommended changes.
The River North Plan area is generally bound by I-35 to the north & northwest, I-37 to the east, Houston and Travis to the south and Navarro and Main to the west. The development of a Master Plan is a collaborative effort that involves many different community stakeholders. Master Plans are conceptual in nature and provide a general framework for development decisions. They are utilized by city officials, developers, city agencies, non-profits, etc. as guides that provide direction to the decision-making process.

I know-- it's weird, but the Alamo really does look better without the Marriott RC behind it-- SA looks almost tropical there, like Havana or something.

That is the La Quinta. It looks about right. It is only 14 stories and somewhere between 125-140' tall. The IMAX in the foreground of the La Quinta, is between 75-90' tall. So it looks about right.
Though it is a nice looking picture, it doesn't look better without the Marriott. For the purposes of the photo it is an interesting idea to ommit it.
