Retirement community to honour former dairy with opening of ice cream parlour

Amica at Stoney Creek has a scoop in store for residents and community members.

The 155-unit retirement community will open an ice cream parlour this summer in honour of the former Stoney Creek Dairy. The facility opened in January on the property of the old dairy, which closed its doors in September 2012 after serving the community for more than 70 years.

“We are in the final stages of constructing and decorating the parlour,” Amica at Stoney Creek executive director Jennifer Sarkis said. “We have been lucky to have people from the community share some of their memorabilia from the former dairy with us and look forward to showcasing it.”

The parlour will face King Street East and feature big windows, double doors, custom woodwork counters and a sitting space with chairs and tables.

It also will have mementos from the old dairy, including big milk tins and “stolen from the Stoney Creek Dairy” trays.

Sarkis said in addition, the parlour’s wall will feature pictures and showcase the story of the dairy.

“We are still looking for any memorabilia,” she said. “We also are just in the early stages of selecting a Canadian ice cream company as our provider and will be unveiling this at our grand opening. We plan at this time on having the parlour open on weekends to the public.”

Sarkis said she believes the parlour will be a “nice addition” to Stoney Creek.

The dairy played a significant role in the community and its closing was an “emotional and sad experience” for many people, she said.

“We have several residents that are affiliated with the dairy; some worked at the dairy or had children and even grandchildren who worked there,” Sarkis said. “We already have heard from many that had their first job, first date and first kiss all here on this property. We are honoured to be able to provide an opportunity to remember this historical business that created so many fond experiences and memories for our residents and our community.”

Meh... I guess it could've been worse.

Was looking at this place for my parents a couple years ago, and I was quoted about $4,500/month. No, thanks.

In those last pictures it seems a bit odd to see doors that lead to a flower bed and no walkway. Will they install railings on these doors too?

The effect of this reminds me a little of those hydro transformer houses you see where there's even a table lamp left on behind the curtains. but something just nags at your consciousness telling you that this is not a real home with people inside.
