Now there's a side of Florence you don't often see!

Great set - very thought provoking. I guess the culprit is in the last photo - cities that are designed for cars are always going to be very different from their pre-industrial cousins.

Indeed! I also find the Ingromarket bldg particularly offensive in the Banal category. Some of the newer residential developments seem quite well done as opposed to the 60's 70's type commie ones.

Hi Cambi, very beautiful photos. Excuse me, but I've got a request: have you nothing about the Mugello, and especially any photos of Vicchio?
Thanx

Hi Gio'

I've only seen the wonderful inner city of Florence, but have seen Rome's suburbs, which look similar to the photos above. Also, at least around Rome, in the burbs, you can find some low rise garden apartment complexes that look very similar to those in the U.S.. My sister lived in one like that.

Firenze is one of my favorite cities in the world (visited 2007). The suburbs, not so much.

Awesome. Thanks for the unique tour. I like a lot of the locations. Some of the buildings are ugly but not too bad. Looks better than half the suburbs I live near.

Impressive McDonalds!

I have a quick story: A few years ago I was hanging out here in my home city of Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania and I was at a nightclub dancing, hanging out. And I saw this group of like 5 guys who were kinda acting arrogant and tried starting a fight with some stranger. I thought it was funny so I went over to the group as they were getting kicked out and asked them about themselves and they were all early 20's Italian Uni students going to Carnegie Mellon our best local university in this city.
So I walked down the streets with them a bit and they were friendly to me. We had a few good laughs and some funny street stuff that you do when you're buzzed up and walking around a bunch of other drunk funny people. So they were saying how much they hate America and stuff and once again, I thought it was hilarious. Anyway, they got hungry and wanted to eat some late night drunk food. I was hungry too. So there's about 30 great restaurants in a 4 block stretch and they choose MCDONALDS! I was very surprised at their choice as we ordered our horribly shitty burgers.
Anyway, the whole thing was a fun memory for me but their choice of restaurants still stays with me. They were acting "too cool" for the locals and like I said making fun of everything American yet they chose the most horrible thing the US has unleashed on the world: McDonalds; Spreading unhealthiness and obesity across the globe like a cancer.

So my final thought was, I guess that pretty much summarized the whole thing: That restaurant and our country too seem to be the place that everyone LOVES TO HATE. Quite literally.

Cheers!

Where are the pedestrians? All home busying themselves on their Ipads? Suburbs are suburbs are suburbs! There's a bleakness to many of these photo's.

Interesting trip, nonetheless!

Is the big white building (pic #11 from the bottom of the second group) an office building?

Banal yet a far cry from the ghetto suburbs of Paris aka Détroit-sur-la-Seine.

No, you're not there yet, making it a bit longer, more complicated and tedious than it already is.

You say Détroit-sur-Seine when you're fluent, like Ivry-sur-Seine, Nogent-sur-Marne and such suburban names.

When you mention the river alone, you say 'la Seine', but in this particular case, when a river is part of the name of a municipality, definite article la is skipped.

So Détroit-sur-Seine is the proper joke here.
