South Dakato - 2003 II - Black Hills - Needles - Badlands - Laura Ingalls-Wilder

SpearFish canyon

Bridal Veil Falls - the best stops are free - just a small brown highway sign and a pulloff, then a short hike and crossing the river, a major adventure for the kids.

Giant Ground Hog

My wife read the little house series as we drove across scenic South Dakota.

Windy lunch stop

Wind is fun

Amazing country and great photos. That's one of those experiences the kids will carry all their lives.

Mammoth Pits ? when traveling with 4 kids and 2 women I just go with the flow, we didn't flow past those.

When I get around to scanning old stuff (80s) I do have a shot of my brother in law clowning in a tar pool, in the middle of the parking lot, in LaBrea Ca. They just dug a major cache of bones out of it.

Yes the kids remember this, although they remember the "dead marshes" and hiking at night more than the big scenic wonders.

Looks like a fine road trip. I remember those days when I was a kid and plan on doing the same with mine!

My dad and mom are both very gratified to see that all their kids got the camping bug. My wife virtually channeled her mother in law a few years ago when we were in a Wisc state park (High Cliff) and as I was recalling the location from my childhood she let out with a loud "Don't run next to the CLIFF you will fall off and KILL yourself" - verbatim what my mom had said, at the exact same spot, 40 yrs prior.
