I think the Arch project is exciting. I know I've been downtown to a Cards game before and than wanted to get down the the river front maybe to a concert or something, don't remember and that walk was kind of sketchy because of traffic and such. It seems like the lid will make that much more comfortable. Plus tying the old courthouse into the arch grounds is kind of cool. I think this is long over due. I know some people were disappointed that some really over the top project with gondolas over the river and such weren't picked but this seems much more doable. I'm glad to see it underway. As a country bumpkin the Arch still fascinates me every time I make it down to the city. lol

^The park lid over the highway will definitely address safety for pedestrians and motorists alike. Just yesterday, after running a red light, a car collided with a dump truck on Memorial Drive.

The $380-million Gateway Arch grounds renovations are a part of $700-million parks improvement proposition passed in April.

Parks and greenways throughout St. Louis City and St. Louis County will benefit. Other regional counties - particularly on the Missouri side - opted out.

Below is a video of today's ceremonies.

Dignitaries including (R to L) Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill break ground on the Park over the Highways€™ project, the first component in the CityArchRiver 2015 plan to revitalize and improve access to the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, home of the Gateway Arch, in St. Louis on Friday.

Officials break ground on Arch grounds renovations (Video)

To all those hating on the thread, don't read it. Arch City literally covers most (if not every) big development story in the region.

He can't help it if every project doesn't have a one billion dollar price tag.
Although off the top of my head head he has reported on huge projects including:
Mississippi River Bridge
Arch Grounds
Cortex
Washington U Housing and Educational bldgs
Midtown Developments
Ballpark village
SLU Law
Downtown Residential

Simply put, if you don't like reading about the things happening here (from mondane to exciting) don't bother clicking on the link.

Thanks arch.

Yes, I appreciate all the info and hard work that Arch City provides. I will do my best to contribute more too. So many great things are happening in St. Louis right now.

Hey Arch! Are these the latest renderings for Ballpark Village?

Not sure. A few other cool, historic buildings have been saved though.

I wish. Acutally no. They dumbed the rendering during the recession. Hopefully, there will be a few of those towers in the near future. Of course you know since the city did not back bonds for the project, it's been slow-going.

St. Louis has five area children's hospitals - St. Louis Children's, Cardinal Glennon Hospital for Children, Mercy Children's, Ranken-Jordan and Shriners.

A new Shriners Hospital for Children-St. Louis, which is not a part of Wash U Med's $1.2-billion expansion plans, is under construction at the Washington University Medical Center.

Here are more Donald Danforth Plant Science Center - BRDG Park (Bio-Research & Development Growth Park) expansion renderings.

Located in suburban Creve Coeur, BRDG Park (Bio-Research & Development Growth Park) is also planning an expansion due to tenant growth. The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center - BRDG Park will be nearly 800,000 square feet when completely built out - making it one the world's largest research campuses focused on plant science.

As reported last week, The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center has announced plans to build a new $45 million addition to its research facility - as seen in the rendering.

The new building, slated to open in fall of 2015, will give the Center the capacity to house more than 100 additional researchers. The three-story addition will include flexible research laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment as well as core facilities and additional growth chamber space. The Center plans to break ground in early 2014.

Work continues on Reinsurance Group of America's $150-million Chesterfield Valley headquarters. The Fortune 500 company expects to hire an additional 300-400 workers.

Reinsurance insures insurance companies and recently opened an office in China. Worldwide, RGA has approximately $2.9 trillion of life reinsurance in force and assets of more than $40 billion.

St. Louis' world-class zoo keeps adding new exhibits.

Aug 6, 2013, 2:33pm CDT
Zoo closes penguin exhibit as $18 million polar bear updates begin

Beginning later this month, visitors to the Saint Louis Zoo won’t be able to visit the penguins and puffins. That exhibit will be closed until 2015 as the zoo begins construction on an $18 million polar bear habitat.

McDonnell Polar Bear Point will encompass more than 7,000 square feet and will be able to hold up to five polar bears, Gallagher said. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for polar bears will decide which bears the zoo receives. Polar bears were listed as a threatened species in the U.S. under the Endangered Species Act of 2008.

The zoo expects to have bears for the opening of its exhibit, but those animals have yet to be identified.

The new exhibit will feature rocky landscapes and new pools. A walk-through cave will allow visitors to get close to the polar bears. Gallagher said the zoo is still trying to determine the exact construction time line, and said those dates will be announced soon.

The exhibit is part of the zoo’s $120 million The Living Promise Campaign. To date, more than $111 million in commitments have been secured for that objective, in which there are goals to update the Grizzly Bear, Sun Bear and Andean Bear exhibits, among others, according to zoo officials.

Here's the BJC Administrative Building in CORTEX, again.

It's awesome to see a run-down and under-utilized century's old industrial area transforming into a modern science, technology and health corridor.

St. Louis' economy is definitely transforming.

Hotel construction and proposals in St. Louis are unusually slow right now, but here's a Drury Inn & Suites under construction in the St. Louis Galleria area (Brentwood).

The new 9-story, 210-room Drury Inn & Suites hotel will feature a unique, contemporary exterior design. An underground parking garage is also planned, located below the front parking lot with access from the side and rear of the building. A national brand restaurant will compliment the development's outparcel.

As one CORTEX building nears completion (BJC Administrative) and another (@ 4240) - although still under construction -fills rapidly with potential national and international start-ups, renderings emerge for another CORTEX "heritage" building - which originally had been slated for demolition. A former parts and equipment manufacturing/printing building will become home to a new research lab/incubator.

About the building from St. Louis Preservationist, Michael R. Allen's Preservation Research Office,

Quote:
"Although unadorned, and perhaps a bit sepulchral, the brick industrial building possesses several unique architectural features. Built in 1936 for a printing company, the building is the work of the noted firm Mauran, Russell and Crowell. The firm employed its characteristic genius here. While the concrete-framed fireproof building appears as a four story building, the second and third floors are actually a second floor and mezzanine." Read More
