There are a few problems with this post.
Firstly, "anymore". Were they ever about efficiency? Do you think the Empire State Building was built with LEED status in mind, or do you think that in the past, there was less of an emphasis on environmentally friendly design than there is today.
Secondly, what the hell are you doing on a forum revolving around skyscrapers if you take issue with the purported reason why they're built in the first place?
Thirdly, if 1VB was about erecting Steven L. Green's penis, he would have kept the original roof height at 1388 feet, so he could claim that his tower was the tallest office tower in the city. As is were, the revised and final plans are for a structure a good 80 feet shorter than 1WTC, and to the pinnacle, won't be as tall as the ESB.
Fourthly, these kinds of buildings have
always been about projecting wealth, even if some of them missed the mark. What, do you think the spire erected on the Chrysler Building had any kind of real purpose to it, or do you think it might have had something to do with 40 Wall Street being built downtown, and Walter Chrysler's desire to claim "tallest building in the world" and thus, implicitly, an image of power and wealth.
Fifthly, how does income inequality have anything to do with tall office towers?
