Borden Bridge - 35 km NW of Saskatoon the bridge crosses the North Saskatchewan River. The only river crossing on the Yellowhead Highway between Saskatoon and Edmonton (new bridge replaces Borden Bridge).

In the early 1980s, a new bridge was built to replace the narrow, two lane Borden Bridge. The provincial government closed the Borden Bridge in 1985. In 2007 it was auctioned off and sold to the highest bidder. Orville Middleton paid $33,000 in 2007. At the time, Orville stated he was planning to turn the bridge into an open air dance hall.

- Designed by Bev Evans for his master's thesis while a graduate student at the University of Saskatchewan

- At 250 metres long, the bridge was the longest bow-string arch bridge in North America at construction

- Labourers were paid 35 cents an hour during construction, and 50 cents if they brought a horse

- $33,000: The price Orville Middleton paid for the bridge

I love the Borden bridge, I have very vague recollections of actually traversing it while it was still in use (my dad grew up in Yorkton and my grandparents lived there, so we made many-a-trip out that way). I love that it still stands, and hope it does for a long time to come.

At the moment I'm a bit unsure about the Calatrava bridge. I think it has a lot of potential, but I can't quite tell if I like it all that much from the renderings. I like the rendering from inside most so far. I think I'm not so sure how I feel about the red on the exterior. If the materials used are high quality (I assume they will be) and the shade of red is something that ages well I'll definitely feel better about it. Guess I'll just have to wait and see. I also like that it doesn't have any supports underneath. At any rate I don't think it is an ugly bridge.

Well i was up in the air over Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows the other day so i made sure to snap many photos. I hope to post them all on this forum later, but for the time being here are some i took of the Golden Ears Bridge and almost the entire north side of the project.

I will post them in the order they were taken. I personally think the best pictures are near the end

These few are just after take off (Pitt Meadows Airport). They are all looking south east.








Here is the airport road interchange (just north of the main bridge structure) You can see a bus going through the tolls. Also i love the roundabouts!




Here you can see the Meadow Ridge Viaduct (this is about 600 meters north of the airport road interchange. You can also see the Lougheed interchange on the north end of it.





I really like this pic, you can see almost all of Maple Ridge in it (it is looking east)





Here is the Lougheed interchange close up. (Can you find Optimus Prime?)




Here is the northern end of the connector you can see making its way through the photo east of Meadow Gardens golf course.




Back to the main bridge structure, this time looking south west.






Here is a close up of the south end of the Meadow Ridge viaduct. That is the offramp to Canadian Tire and Staples!




Here are my favorite photos that show a huge chunk of the project from the Meadow Ridge viaduct to the other side of the river. Note that you can also see the West Coast Express at Meadow Ridge station.






And last but not least looking from the heart of Pitt Meadows towards the bridge just before landing. Also note the towers being built.




I hope you all enjoyed these, i plan to post my other ariels later. I also plan to go up many more times. Please no using these for commercial use (i don't think anyone will, but you never know)

great shots. Has the Golden Ears bridge had a noticeable impact on traffic in the GVRD?

Thanks! On the Maple Ridge side traffic appears heavier on the Lougheed highway (as i suspected) and we have some localized rush hour jams on a few 4 way stops on the side roads now in Maple Ridge (several of them are to be upgraded into signalized and roundabout intersections over the next year). I don't know much about the south end though.

And as for The Lions Gate Bridge, it was great at a time when it could accomodate the commuters from North Van. Now however, I'm sure no one would mind seeing it go.

That would leave one bridge and the SeaBus connecting Vancouver to the North Shore

I like that Golden Ears Bridge (funky name, BTW). I've never seen a cable stayed bridge with such stubby towers before - does the nearby airport have a height restriction that demanded such a design?

That is the exact reason why the Golden Ears Bridge was designed as 4 short towers instead of 2 tall towers.

The Lachine Bridge spanning the St. Lawrence River.

And what was once part of the Lachine Bridge became the Outlook CPR Bridge spanning the South Saskatchewan River.

A hand-me-down from CPR...

The bridge structure sitting atop the 9 piers was originally across the St. Lawrence River near Montreal, constructed in 1885. This portion of the bridge was taken apart, moved and re-assembled at Outlook in 1911.

And what was once an active railway bridge is now the longest pedestrian bridge in Canada (910 m). The SkyTrail Pedestrian Bridge forms part of the Trans Canada Trail.
