Just so everyone sees this video, Moreno tells the owner on tape that he will "come back to me on your knees" and that his property will be "totally vacant for 3 years" among other things.

That is a poor choice of examples. Rezoning of the Jesuit site was on clear legal, even mandatory grounds.
The property was a under a Type 1 amendment that had sunset years before.

Under 17-13-0311 it was mandatory that it return to the underlying M zoning, they had merely been ignoring this this clause of the zoning code.

Damn, I'm curious what the owner did to piss him off?

What I don't understand is, even if Moreno downzones that doesn't mean the owner can't sign residential leases.

It would simply be an existing nonconforming use, and I'm sure with the age of the property it would be easy to prove to the Zoning Administrator that the apartments were there all along.

That Moreno speaks to a property owner as though he knows what's best for him is what I have a problem with.

An alderman exists for a number of (often-misguided) reasons, but it irks me to think that trying to influence an owner by pointing a finger in his face and saying 'you'll come crawling back' is his approach. It's just kind of unprofessional, IMO.

I saw on the news that Moreno said he was 'glad' that the video was out there, and that 'yeah, sometimes conversations get heated'. I'm not sure if he truly believes that or if that's just doubling down/damage control.

Listen carefully, he is threatening to send in inspectors and drag him into building court not just rezone it. He is a corrupt thug.

Well the Double Door donated $7500 to Moreno, the building owner donated none. The owner failed to bribe the alderman properly and this is what happens when you don't pay tribute to the alderman.

It's not unprofessional, it's blatantly corrupt and undemocratic. Luckily the guy behind that Project Six website is Faisil Kahn, the former inspector general for city council. He is a solid guy and once he trains his attention on someone, I have a feeling the big dogs (Feds, state government) will have to take a look at it.

Damage control? That's great advertising for Moreno. His job is to serve the residents in his district. He's doing it. If that's the Double Door landlord (I think it is?), that guy is a crook and a liar and he certainly deserves worse than this.

How is he "serving residents"?

I'm a resident of the 1st Ward and he is not serving me....

Aldermen serve themselves first.

How is the owner of the building who collects rent from the Double Door, a separately owned and run business, a crook?

The owner of a building who fought for and won an eviction case in February...

Stubborn? Greedy? Whatever.

But a crook? What is crooked about positioning your property and removing tenants to maximize its sales potential?

What is crooked is an alderman picking battles based on where donations are coming from under the guise of "non-gentrification". Excuse me? Wicker Park has been gentrified. It happened. There's a Stan's Donuts across the street, for crying out loud.

And FWIW, I loved Double Door. Drank many Daisy Cutters and danced my butt off at Soul Night dozens of times over the past several years.

Hopefully it becomes a lesson of "Go directly to federal prison, do not pass go, do not collect $200 campaign contribution."

i can understand why he is upset. DD was a destination venue and brought lots of people into Wicker Park from outside the neighborhood who also spent money at the surrounding businesses. combined with SubT it kept that area vibrant and energetic almost every night of the week. any ward would kill for a place like that. a retail space just isnt going to have the same impact/cache. people get passionate about music clubs and have personal attachments to them (see: CBGB) in a way that no one will ever have about a Banana Republic or whatever generic yuppie bullshit which does nothing to differentiate the neighborhood goes in this space next.

that said that was obviously the wrong way and time to go about making your case.

moral of the story is: if you run a club, own your building! thankfully the existence of Hideout/EB/Metro arent at the whims of landlords.

Is there going to be a rooftop bar on top of the Moxy? Also, happy to see another giant advertisement get blocked
