Signs of Life

An excavator from Civetta-a foundation contractor -is parked on the 33 St side. Also, there are new survey marks around the site.

OK, Brookfield — where’s that platform you promised you’d start building at your Manhattan West site?

CEO Ric Clark told us last February that work on the rail yard deck would start in the spring. All that stood in the way, he and company president Dennis Friedrich said, was nailing down fine points of an agreement with Amtrak, which controls the tracks in the yard 65 feet below street level at the five-acre site bounded by Ninth and Tenth avenues and West 31st and 33rd streets.

We gave it big play under the headline, “Manhattan West, On Deck.” But work has yet to start on the deck, which is central to Brookfield’s plan for three large towers and a big retail component even though it isn’t necessary to support them.

The company declined to comment. But sources familiar with the situation said that, among other things, the new idea of using at least one of the three planned towers for residential rather than commercial — recently raised by Friedrich in an investors’ conference call — has caused Brookfield to “make sure everything’s aligned to accommodate that possibility.”

And, sources said, the Amtrak agreement still isn’t nailed down.

After first announcing its deck plan in 2006, Brookfield has several times told media including The Post it would start building it by various dates, but failed to meet any of the timetables. Big dreams often take longer than first imagined, and Brookfield can afford to wait — but shouldn’t a giant, publicly traded company be a little more cautious with cheery forecasts it might not be able to meet?

Brookfield weighs massive renovation of former Daily News headquarters

June 19, 2012

A look at some random images from the website (http://www.manhattanwestnyc.com/) reveal a possible new look for 450.
The other towers are just stand in placeholders. Also, more looks at a potential plaza.

Good new project, but not good for the tall, from 1216f/935 ft to a new 950 ft twin towers.

I wouldn't be too concerned about height just yet, these are still place holders. The height will come with the final design.

1. These look to be taller 950 feet. My guess is that they are 990 feet tall and that would give New York 2 supertalls instead of just 1.
2. These are not final designs and are intended to show only one possible configuration.
3. We may even get a third supertall here if they do keep the current design and make the residential tower very slender like 432 Park.

There is no need for despair until the final designs are announced.

Just make them twin supertalls. Would be like the Twins had a successor somewhere in Manhattan but Hudson Yards would block it in western views.

Well, at least some people bother to read. I posted those renderings just to show the possible integration of 450 into the complex, also with a new reclad. Not only are those placeholder designs for the towers, they are also for a configuration of a plan that has since changed.

Brookfield May Add Housing to Its Manhattan West Development

By David M. Levitt
May 4, 2012

Quote:
Brookfield Office Properties Inc., owner of downtown New York’s World Financial Center, may include as many as 900 units of housing at its Manhattan West project, which it has marketed mainly for offices........“We’ve always highlighted the office density because we’re an office landlord,” Friedrich said. “But we have the ability to build 900 units on that site. That market has really taken off, and may drive greater value for us, so we took a little bit of time to study that.”

Chief Executive Officer Ric Clark said the company is “on the verge” of starting the deck, pending completion of negotiations with authorities. Any housing would be “within the envelope” of the 5.4 million square feet (502,000 square meters) of development planned for the site, Friedrich said.

Please, no more glass twins for midtown -- there are already at least three glass boxy twins already -- TWC, Silverstean's apartments on west side and twins on Riverside south (there may even be two sets of twins on Riverside).

They Have Finally started

The foundation contractors-Civetta/Posillico has begun excavation at both 31 and 33 Sts. There is a large Bauer drill from Underpining and Foundation. The building permits are all posted on the fence at 31 St and 9th ave.

since the Coach Tower in the Hudson Yards project was shortened I hope they find a way to increase the Height of the north tower for this project to make it a supertall. Maybe one can be for offices and the other a luxury residential supertall.

Nice update. Next year will be even more exciting that this year was in terms of projects under construction. We really nave nothing to complain about, considering we could have been seeing none of these developments get underway.

I would really like it if they converted those Twin buildings now into twin glass boxes and add a mast to one. It would look a lot like the former Twin Towers. Then add the plaza and done.

^ Very nice. I've noticed that when coming into Penn Station. The video gives the impression that work on the platform will come before anything else, so it is interesting.
