This City Has Nearly 5 Times More Industrial Robots Than Any Other In The U.S.

Quote:
NationalTech August 15, 2017 Lara O'Keefe, Bisnow

The auto industry houses almost half of the industrial robot population in the country with about 233,305 in total working in the sector. Detroit leads all U.S. cities with about 15,000 robots in place, nearly five times more than any other major market.

Probably not a shocker but still, good news for the city if not so much for its blue collar work force.

Good news for the metro-area sprawl, probably not so good news for Detroit. I believe there's only one auto plant in Detroit, and basically all the engineering/parts companies are in the sprawl.

Auto plants have always been far away from the city center they have always needed tons of space, this has no new effect on sprawl it's been like that since Henry Ford.

I get it, you left for New York and you have a Madonna complex but your negative nancy shit is really irritating.

With the state ranking in the top 10 in engineering employment, this shouldn't come as a surprise. The auto industry is engineering intensive, from R&D all the way to the actual manufacturing of the product. Each assembly plant usually has over 100 salaried workers on staff, many of them engineers not to even speak of the hundreds of parts suppliers. Before that, though, the autos, both domestic and many foreign ones, have huge R&D facilities, here.

As more an more tech is being integrated into automobiles, the need for engineers is only growing: Metro Detroit on par with Silicon Valley in tech jobs. Whether you define is more broadly or more strictly, the region has been an engineering hub for decades.

@LMich Needless to say, cops are actually social workers, and you need skilled qualified humans to do this very tough job.

Otherwise, I remember reading reports about the Fiat-Chrysler merging. This has apparently been a good (if not excellent) deal, bringing improvement to both sides.

Fiat is said to have brought some of the more recent and efficient production processes to Detroit, namely more automation that was already common to the German and some French and Italian manufacturers.

Meanwhile, the US requirements are seriously helping Fiat to enhance their quality and range of products. They seem more positively ambitious today.
Not to say that every subsidiary of the Fiat group was crappy - in fact, most such as Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia and Alfa Romeo are known as pretty or very good brands and fair vehicles - but those cheaper sold under the Fiat brand itself were dangerously lower end... There was a bit of that stereotypical Latin carelessness in there. I think this is changing. And when it comes to engineering, it's always much better to aim at developing higher-end and better quality products.

So the Fiat-Chrysler deal seems something positive IMO.

^I believe the Ford Rouge is in Dearborn on the border of Detroit, but for a lil while longer there is the FCA Conner ave plant that make Vipers but its ceasing production in 2019. It's not just the big 3 that operate big automotive plants in the city proper Detroit Diesel is a huge facility on Telegraph rd that straddles both sides of the Detroit - Redford border. My mom worked there in the 70's and one time she told me a story about how everyone would fight over desks on the Redford side so they wouldn't have to pay city taxes (wonder why so many facilities straddle borders).
