I'm seeing some glass/plastic on the crown today, at least on the west side. Sorry I don't have a camera so I couldn't take a photo. So far none of it has been the brightly colored stuff though.

More like an instant piece of shit. This is nothing like 900 N Michigan which is made of REAL materials like limestone. This is a giant, mal-proportioned, vertical turd that we can only hope is flushed down the toilet in 30-50 years. This and most of River North should be razed as they are disgraces to the city of Chicago.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm fucking sick of this ugly shit going up all over the place and random people praising it as if its some work of art by Michelangelo. Hint: any real artist or architect would vomit if they saw this abomination, especially if it were associated with their name.

I don't think anyone has any idea how badly River North will age in a couple decades. The precast facades will continue to grow more drab everyday, and it's not like they are going to get cleaned up. Just look at the burn / smoke marks all over the facade of the Homewood Suites on Grand. You think they would clean that up.

It reflects well on the Chicago forumers that the only praise for this building seems to come from those who aren't from Chicago.

Exactly, that's the worst part. Each of these monstrosities will end up looking worse and worse with each passing year. Just look at the Fairmont or whatever the one over on Wabash and Superior is called. It was barely ten years old and was already covered in hairline cracks that absorbed water and caused staining. They had to go grind them all out and repair them and then paint the thing because it was so bad. Thank god they painted it or it would have been covered in spidery lines for all eternity.

You guys, are waaay too hard on yourselves.

Of course, I'm looking at the building from a distance, up close it might be another storey. However, I do feel it fits well into its environs.

Sometimes a bit of ugliness can be....beautiful.

Weird, but I have noticed that in cities that I have traveled to

Critiques of the new Ritz-Carlton

Hello caltrane74.

Yes, some of the comments regarding this building, from endemic members of the city, may at times seam harsh, but none the less spot on.

This new Ritz-Carlton appearing and sharing much of the bland nature found in the hundreds of "cookie cutter hire rises" littering such cites as Shanghai, Beijing, Vancouver, Seoul, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Tokyo ...

Hence this structure, located in a high visibility area of Chicago, a city with a centennial level history for high rise structures possessing a greater level of "attention to detail" and materials, in many ways should be expected to provoke such strong responses.

The firm responses in this thread predicated on passionate pride in their city's skyline, one of finest in the world, if not "THE FINEST", leading to critiques of a granular nature.

Yes, but there is a difference between ugliness and something that will gradually fall into a state of irreparable disrepair and become a permanent blight on the cityscape. I fear all these poorly constructed, VE'd to hell, piles of shit are destined to meet a fate of mediocre concrete patch jobs and eventually fresh coats of custard paint.

Brutalism is ugliness that is beautiful, this is just gaudy, low end, disneyworld shit we are seeing here.

My opinion is that it fits into the Mag Mile, which on the whole really is not a great example of architecture (obviously wrigley, tribune, hancock notwithstanding).

What's worse, Chicago Place or Ritz-Carlton?

^^^ Chicago Place by a long shot, but that could change as Chicago Place is renovated and Ritz begins its long, slow, slide into disrepair.
