Hello everyone,

Toronto is now a 7a instead of a 6a6b !
https://www.plantmaps.com/interactiv...diness-map.php

I noticed almost the entire Toronto South of highway 401 is 7a now (see the interactive map above).

With micro climate, some area of Toronto could be a 7b which supports windmill palms. Any thought ? Any zone pushers here ?

Thx

with all due respect, there's no way toronto is in a zone 7, if the map is based upon the USDA designations as it says. it's forecast to be -22 C in toronto this weekend. i'm scrambling to get cover and heat for this weekend to my cold tolerant palms 800 miles southwest of toronto in a 6b...what is the actual source of that data?

As I type this, it's cold out. Not a palm tree in sight. I guess local landscapers have yet to take note of Toronto's recent "upgrade" to zone 7?

Toronto has a warm climate by Canadian standards and is even developing a mild climate by North American standards due to a combination of the effects of climate change and continued urbanization, but let's not kid ourselves.

Winter is still a thing.

There is no way Toronto is in zone 7, Detroit is notably warmer and only in zone 6.

Looks like under the Canadian zone scheme Detroit & Windsor would fall under 7a which would be a U.S. 6a.

yes, one rhapidophyllum hystrix, needle palm, its an understory palm native to the us southeast, and one trachycarpus fortunei, or windmill palm. both are currently sleeping under leaves in a cage, and then layers of mylar, christmas lights, and thick paper wrapping! also have a celeste fig tree that is being protected. i see if i have any uploaded photos from the summer.

here's a winter shot of a needle palm from my old house, i never had to protect it other than some plastic for a few days during any of the winters i was at that house, also in st. louis. i have a palm just like this one in the front of my current house. i also have some agave and spineless mexican cultivar of cactus growing in the front, which may or may not be in trouble as we speak...

edit: this may have been a european palm.

There are people who plant banana trees in Kansas City.

Here's one I pass by every day:

reboot time!

recently drove by this house in Stoney Creek and noticed they had a windmill palm out front. Streetview seems to indicate that it's been there since at least 2007. I wonder if it's protected in the winter, I'll have to drive by next winter and see.

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.2090...7i13312!8i6656

I really wonder if it's possible for hardy windmill palms to survive in the Niagara / Windsor areas. They most likely could have survived this past winter completely unprotected.
