Wheelchair rental in Ottawa

Hi guys, my dad fell on Friday and fractured his ankle. He is in a cast for up to 6 weeks and will need to use crutches in the meantime but he is finding it incredibly hard to do so because his lower back is shot as well.

He would like me to find him a wheelchair to use for the time being. I called Shoppers Home Care at Westgate Shopping Mall but they don't rent wheelchairs. I'll call a couple more places tomorrow (Ontario Medical Supply and Canada Medical Care) but I am wondering if you have had experience renting wheelchairs before and if so, do you have any advice for reasonable option as my dad qualifies as a low-income senior.

I believe the City of Ottawa has a program called Assistive Devices Program (ADP) but it may only be for social assistance recipients but I will inquire tomorrow.

Thanks.

You can find a used wheelchair on Kijiji or UsedOttawa, and then resell when he no longer needs it. Probably cheaper than renting.

Thanks guys, I'll call that place tomorrow and check out Kijiji as well.

I also learn Costco sells wheelchairs at a pretty reasonable price too

I'm a patron of Ontario medical supply. They have always treated me well. Though they are a for-profit enterprise.

Canada Care Medical has a very poor reputation. Despite their cheery media buys on cfra. I have never darkened their door.

There is an a group called Stride Wheelchairs who collect and refurbish used wheelchairs. They sell them but only at a level to cover costs.
